Weird events on a Northern train earlier this evening

Hi all, I was travelling on the 1857 Hull to Doncaster today (2C39, a two car 158). On the approach to Brough, we stopped for a while. Then we started moving again, but very slowly (and with what to me sounded like wheelslip but I'm not any kind of expert). A few seconds later we passed over a...

How does route knowledge work for stations?

Just out of curiousity: Drivers have to retain route knowledge for diversions, how does it work for stations? Say a route would normally use platforms 3 and 4 at a station, but could be diverted into 1, 2, 5 or 6 if required. Do drivers need to sign all these platforms same as they would for routes?

Could The Ironbridge Line in Telford become a light rail/tram route?

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/the-ironbridge-line-in-telford.237182/ Wouldn't this be better turned into a light trail/tram system rather than heavy rail? It would be a good starting point for a small tram system covering the Telford area in general...

    New Measurement Train Drivers

Hopefully an easy question to answer. Who drives the NMT? Going all over the country, there can't be drivers that have committed all that route knowledge to memory, so there must be local drivers that swap out at various points. Are they NR employees or contractors? How does scheduling work? Do...

    Lengthening Birmingham - Stansted Services

Hi all, I can find some previous discussion around this already, but nothing that in depth. I'm wondering what would be required to increase the length of the cross country Birmingham-Stansted services? In terms of platform extensions, moving signals, etc. How many coaches could you add now...

    E-ticket availablity on XC app

Hi all, I regularly travel to/from Whittlesford Parkway and Cambridge North. I've been using the Cross Country app and happily buying off peak singles and returns, using a combination of direct GA trains and also changing at Cambridge to/from Thameslinks. Regardless of selected journey, I've...

Trivia - Longest journey between platforms (without using the footbridge)

At Whittlesford Parkway (my local station), if you can't use the footbridge (because you have a wheelchair or whatever), to get from P1 to P2 it's a 4.1 mile journey: Is this the longest in the country, or is there somewhere even worse?

    Disruption at Cambridge 19-Oct-2021

Looks like major disruption at Cambridge tonight due to a dewirement. GA Twitter thread: https://twitter.com/greateranglia/status/1450537268511379458?t=9mLpuGQSirKEDMselqcIng&s=19 Thameslink Twitter thread, including two images of the dewirement...

Do trains have fuel gauges in the cab?

Very simple question, just out of curiosity! I can imagine that there's no particular need for drivers to know the fuel state of a train, given that there's not a lot they can do about it. I'm guessing "fuel management" is left to depots and planners.

    Signalling Map of the UK

Hi all, Apologies if this has been asked before. I did search, but couldn't find anything. I'm after a map of the UK showing information on which signalling system (s) is/are in operation on a particular section of railway. I don't mean things like tracksy that go down to the level of...

West Midlands Trains 25% capacity increase on the Northampton to Euston LNR route (reported in March 2019)

With reference to this press release: https://www.londonnorthwesternrailway.co.uk/about-us/news-desk/west-coast-rail-passengers-benefit-more-capacity-and-additional-services-may We often talk about the WCML being "the busiest mixed-traffic railway in Europe" or words to that effect. Given...

Split Tickets - Journey portions not appearing on "normal" sites?

I've just booked a journey through splitticketing.com. I've used the site in the past to find a decent split, but then to avoid the extra fees I've then gone and bought all the portions "the normal way" through a TOC site. This time, I tried to do that and found that the journey portion was...

    Possible HS2 Euston station de-scoping

From the agenda of a TFL board meeting to be held 3rd Feburary (link), a quote from page (emphasis mine) This would be a reduction from the original 11 platforms planned. This is only something the DfT is proposing/investigating, not an actual set-in-stone thing that is happening. Lots of...

What is this Sprinter doing on the WCML near Rugby?

Ok so I'm on Wikipedia reading about DIRFT and I find it's built on the old site of Kilsby and Crick station and I click on the photo of the old station site and it's got a 2-car Northern Sprinter in the background. Link to photo The photo was taken on 22 February 2019. I guess it must be a...

Ickleton TSR - only in one direction?

Hi all, On a foot crossing on the WAML near me (https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=18/52.07448/0.18277), there is currently a TSR of 70mph in place. On the Up line there is a TSR speed board just south of the Ickleton Road LC, and a termination board immediately south of the foot crossing...

What is this thing on a level crossing?

My local LC has this attached to the lights: I'm guessing it's for monitoring the lights, checking they're actually working, but the angle doesn't look quite right for that. There's one on each side, both on the right hand side of the road. Am I right? If not, what is it?

Siding/yard off the WAML at Duxford

Hi, I've just moved to a little village near Duxford in Cambridgeshire. Not much in the way of massively interesting rail things, but just down the road there's a connection off the WAML to a siding, leading to a factory. The factory makes composites now, but clearly did enough to justify a...

    Strange Behaviour of Sprinter Lights

A few times now I've noticed that the Sprinters I get home from work have this weird thing they do when approaching the station. (I didn't note the exact class of Sprinter) Basically, the "doors are unlocked" sidelights (I don't know the correct term) flash once, very briefly, when the train is...

    Northern Leeds-Nottingham Services

I often get the train to/from Nottingham/Langley Mill. In the Langley Mill-Nottingham direction, the train is fairly consistently 5-10 late at LGM. Today for instance: https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/Y61338/2019-11-07/detailed It left Leeds on time, but slowly accrues delay through the...
