TfW names a Class 197 unit "Penarth Pier"

It doesn't even work in Welsh - 'iw' would properly be pronounced very differently to how they're wanting it to be. It's not English, and it doesn't need translating! Disclaimer: I am Welsh and a staunch proponent of the Welsh language. However, this is silly.

Month-long shutdown of North Wales Coast Line for engineering works

They do. The bridge they're building isn't at the station, it's between some of the holiday parks and the seafront.

    TfW PAYG - North Wales

I don't believe so. It would probably be a bad idea. Seeing people tap off on the platform would make some people believe you could tap on on the platform for a west-bound train. As usual, it's introduced cack handedly. Why is it not across the whole network? Just equip every station and turn...

    Transpennine Catering Strike - Compensation

I'd expect them to try the "due to circumstances beyond our control (industrial action)" line.

How should the planned £50m be spent to improve Euston?

Avanti usually do at Glasgow Central. It would be horrendous if they didn't.

New mandatory ticket area sign at Birmingham Snow Hill

"Polite notice" is invariably a euphemism for we'd like this to be the case, it isn't but you might misread it as "police notice". Very poor.

Avanti West Coast - Renationalisation on March 7th 2027

An expert is just a voxpop with an appearance fee.

Could reversals on the Caledonian Sleeper viably be avoided so flatbeds could be introduced?

I'll admit I've never been on a sleeper train so have no idea, but I feel someone needs to explain this concept of turning a bed around to me. I've never done this at home, if you wanted to you'd just put the pillows at the other end.

    Trivia: Non-accessible interchange stations

One of the worst must be Norwood Junction. Since London Overground and Thameslink 2000 were introduced all stations from New Cross Gate to Norwood Junction lost their East Croydon services, so anyone wanting to go to East Croydon, Gatwick Airport or anywhere further south will be told by journey...

HS2 could cost up to £102.7bn and trains won't start until at least 2036

What crowd are you busting? Who are all these people who want to go between Birmingham and London? Why does speeding up their journey matter? Even more than ever nobody can explain why we're building HS2 other than some "west coast mainline full Milton Keynes freight" nonsense. It should have...

LNER ‘false’ arrival times to avoid Delay Repay?

I may be missing something, but I can't think of any scenario where this is silly.

    What counts as a microfleet?

What's wrong with "small fleet" and "large fleet"?
  13. M

LNER ‘false’ arrival times to avoid Delay Repay?

I would doubt this. Delay repay will be a pretty insignificant amount of money. Significant sometimes to the individual, and insignificant to The Railway.

Birmingham New Street the worst UK station?

It's unusual not to see cleaning staff with a big bin bag on Avanti trains, particularly if you're nearing the terminus of a journey.

HS2 could cost up to £102.7bn and trains won't start until at least 2036

I'd hope that remains the current pattern with a Stafford stop rather than revert back to fast Crewe-Milton Keynes. Stafford gives a useful connection into Cross Country for Chester and North Wales.

Birmingham New Street the worst UK station?

Really, victim blaming is rarely a good look. What do you mean by "industry" out of interest?

LNER ‘false’ arrival times to avoid Delay Repay?

I'd just put the Wrexham example down to one or more of incompetence, bravado, or pragmatism.
  18. M

LNER ‘false’ arrival times to avoid Delay Repay?

I don't think delay repay would be a consideration for anyone writing a timetable. It's a miniscule cost. Rather I'd expect allowances are added to make a timetable less likely to be unworkable. We do have people who do this job for a living on here, so I'll defer to them, but as ever I think...

Birmingham New Street the worst UK station?

Yes, and this is also silly.
