What happens if barrier retains ticket later needed for delay repay?

TfW used to require the ticket to be cancelled, and I had several claims which they required me to resubmit because I included a photo of a ticket that hadn't been cancelled. It hasn't happened recently though, so not sure if they still enforce this. I always ask to retain my ticket if I exit...

BR Fares now selling itinerary-free tickets

If you can't generate an itinerary on a TOC website, e.g. because details of RRBs haven't been entered, I doubt that you will be able to on National Rail either.

Severn Valley Railway to trial commuter services

So if there is no access at Bewdley for pushchairs and wheelchairs to platform 2 or 3, how will such passengers travel from Bewdley to Kidderminster? Will they join the train at platform 1, and then stay on the train as it is shunted to platform 2?

BR Fares now selling itinerary-free tickets

This looks very useful, particularly for those situations when TOC websites refuse to sell a ticket, e.g. because rail-replacement bus services haven't been entered onto the system, and therefore journey planners can't find a valid journey for the day you want to travel. However, what would...

    Itineraries including TrawsCymru Bus Services

Looking up train times from Porthmadog to Euston using Fastjp, I was intrigued to see it offering me routes via Bangor and Llandudno Junction, using TrawsCymru buses to reach those stations from Porthmadog (listed as "Rail Replacement" services!). Presumably this is due to TfW integrating these...

    Strange Things Seen on CIS

It is not uncommon for screens to display IP addresses and suchlike technical settings if something goes wrong. Likewise you sometimes see a bootup screen if bootup has stalled. I was once on a train that went through ALL its in-built announcements and associated displays, one after another -...

Severn Valley Railway to trial commuter services

Probably for the same kinds of reasons that minimum connection times in general seem generous to able-bodied people. 1787342768 Why the need for the shunt at Bewdley if the service is DMU operated? Can't a train turn-back at Bewdley from the same platform? If platform 3 is worked by direction...

Questions regarding signal overlaps and signalling history

The signalbox instructions should state where the clearing points are - the signalman isn't expected to work it out for themselves. Likewise it should state the fogging point, something that if it isn't visible from the signalbox due to fog then the fogging regulations come into force.

Introduction of European Entry-Exit Scheme (EES)

As opposed to the old system, where a faded or unreadable stamp in your passport could lead to a passport officer accusing you of overstaying.

Severn Valley Railway to trial commuter services

As previous, my understanding is that the line is already track-circited, as it is worked by direction lever. A basic switch out functionality need not be complex, and shouldn't be expensive if the work is done by volunteers. Before closing out, the Bewdley and Kidderminster signalmen set the...

Questions regarding signal overlaps and signalling history

Ah, one of the problems with getting out of date with current practice. The overlap lengths specified in SSP20 and its successor standards didn't include gradient in any consideration of overlap length. It looks like the standard does now include it as "an influence". But quite how do you...

Questions regarding signal overlaps and signalling history

You need to remember that semaphore signalling and Absolute Block Working as we now know them weren't suddenly invented, they came about through a long process of evolution. Also that although the BoT had the power to refuse approval for a new railway to be opened (to passengers), they had no...

Questions regarding signal overlaps and signalling history

I seem to recall that initially distant signals were required to be a nominal one mile from the first stop signal. Nowadays the distance between the first caution signal is based on braking distance, which is calculated based on speed and gradient. But the overlap length is still an arbitrary...

Severn Valley Railway to trial commuter services

You don't need to go to all that kind of complication. The signalling at Porthmadog Harbour works automatically when the frame is switched out. In unmanned mode, the signals clear automatically without the levers being pulled. If all you are talking about is a single train coming off NR...

Questions regarding signal overlaps and signalling history

My recollection was that the replacement joint was usually at least 5m beyond the signal. Where the joint was closer, so there was a chance of the driver seeing the signal go back, then delayed replacement would be considered. So the signal would be replaced when the front of the train...

Severe Alert from the UK Government

So should it have been sent out world wide? After all, just consider how many people fly into Heathrow and Gatwick every day, and how many come through the Channel Tunnel.

Introduction of European Entry-Exit Scheme (EES)

I wouldn't rely on it. My experiences of going through Prague have been VERY different, depending on how busy the airport is. Entering the EU, nothing much you can do other than be prepared for more delay getting through passport control than you experienced before EES. Leaving the EU, arrive...

Severe Alert from the UK Government

According to the uk.gov website, the messages are sent out on a rolling basis, starting from 1900. I didn't receive mine until about 1950. So it might well be that the English language version takes longer to roll-out than the Welsh language version, considering the numbers involved. I don't...

TfW Live Status Page - incorrect information

Last year, TfW replaced its JourneyCheck website with its own in-house Live Status page: TfW Live Map According to the key, a line in red is supposed to mean that 20% of trains are delayed by 20 minutes or more. The line from Dovey Junction to Borth is currently red, despite only one train...

Meaning of terms such as Cancelled At Point of Entry (CAPE) etc

I wasn't aware of the problems with what3words, but it is far superior to OS Grid references, for example. OS may be fine for safety critical trained staff, but is very poor for the public, as it is so easy to get it wrong, numbers transposed, longitude and latitude the wrong way around, etc...
