Wars, killing, politics disasters, etc., etc., does constant harping about these make them worse?

Does anyone really believe that if we all stick our heads in the sand and ignore what is going on in the rest of the world, we would be better off? It would effectively give our politicians a free hand to make whatever international policies they wanted, without any public backlash. Policies...

    Ticket collection

Note that not all stations with LO services have National Rail ticket machines. West Brompton for example only seems to have LU ticket machines, despite National Rail services calling there. This link may be more accurate than the Trainline link: https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations/ For...

Should London and other UK cities adopt a numbering system for Underground, metro, light rail and suburban rail lines?

In Prague, the metro lines are lettered A, B and C. In the trams, the display that shows the next stops will show connections with the metro by simply following the stop name with the AB and/or C surrounded by little arrows. It is simple and easy to understand. Try doing that with line names!

    Ticket collection

Not any station. Only stations with a ticket office or ticket machine that can issue National Rail tickets (see previous posts about LU/LO, Elizabeth line and Mersey rail).

Rail Replacement Bus/Coach - advance information

My understanding is that the TOCs contract a supplier, who sub-contracts the work out, often with a number of bus companies supplying buses and drivers. In addition, there will likely be a local coordinator who will arrange things on the ground. As the TOCs don't contract the companies direct...

How Can TFW Journey Check Say ‘Good Service’ When A line is Closed?

Journeycheck provide information for a number of operators, including Avanti and XC, not just TfW. Where do they get their data from?

    Cancelling a Level Crossing

They would have been shown on the plans that were deposited when the Act was presented to parliament. These plans often had to be amended as the Act worked its way through parliament. Plans would only be produced for the contractors once the Act had been passed. 1757805454 That is a...

    Russia invades Ukraine

There are sizeable ethnic Russian populations in most of the ex-USSR countries, with close ties to family in Russia. Closing the border crossings would seriously antagonise them, which would be playing straight into Putin's hands.

    European railways - no fences!

When I was working in Stockholm, my walking route into work involved crossing several sidings and a metro line, all unfenced. They were also digging up the land outside our building, and would stop occasionally to let people walk through under the JCB's raised bucket. UK health and safety...

    Cancelling a Level Crossing

A local landowner has no right to insist that a railway company provides a level crossing. Any requirement to provide a level crossing will have been specified in the railway's authorising Act of Parliament. Local landowners would of course lobby for such mitigations to be included in the Act...

2FT gauge question - Who makes point motors?

Anybody who manufactures point motors for the standard gauge! As long as the switch rail travel is the same, and the rail height is the same, you should be able to use standard-gauge machines. For example, the Ffestiniog uses recovered standard-gauge point motors (GEC HAs I think). The...

Automatic Open Crossings (Remotely Monitored), particularly Rosarie

An AOCL that has had half-barriers fitted is an ABCL Automatic Barrier Crossing Locally Monitored. The other type of automatic crossing is the AHB Automatic Half Barriers. If they were being introduced now they would probably be designated as ABCR for consistency, but they got their name when...

Why don’t heritage railways make an effort to “sell” diesel traction?

The KWVR is not doable on a day trip for me, so is likely to involve a Saturday+1 night stay. Booking a Saturday night stay with less than a week's notice is likely to be expensive.

Train Operator is refusing delay repay claim as ticket was bought via National Rail.co.uk and not their own website

As already explained, if you don't want to claim for the delay, then you shouldn't be claiming delay repay. Delay repay is compensation for a delay that you suffered. I am not sure why you don't want to claim it, as it would appear that you are entitled to it, but that is your call. The delay...

    2023 Israel - Hamas / Hezbollah war

It did take us rather a long time to finally take action against South Africa. At least we have started to censure Israel, but our government seems to be walking a tight rope trying not to do anything that would seriously upset the Trump administration. However, I really don't understand why...

Why don’t heritage railways make an effort to “sell” diesel traction?

I agree that such an historic vehicle should be a major draw if properly marketed. But I think it would have to be on more than standby, people would need to be relatively sure it was actually going to run. I am contemplating a visit to the KWVR this autumn, as I have fond memories of...

Train Operator is refusing delay repay claim as ticket was bought via National Rail.co.uk and not their own website

But did the OP abandon the journey? The OP has said that he did travel from Hereford to Ely, using that ticket. However, he bought additional tickets to complete the journey from Birmingham onwards. Importantly, the OP did not return to Hereford, but carried on to Ely by rail. The OP has...

2026: What can we expect in terms of railway heritage events?

A quick online search shows nothing about a ban as such on steam at Marylebone, only the removal of the turntable made it impractical. I suspect it is a lack of runround and turning facilities. If so, there could surely be workarounds.
