Surely the problem is that HS2 is too short for any reasonable intermediate station. The 5-10 minute dwell penalty you would get (slowing, stopping, waiting for a gap to slot back into, speeding up) is too higher percentage based on the travel to and from Birmingham and London to make any sense...
