Diverting the ECML around Welwyn's bottleneck

That "report" reads like university coursework. It has no idea what its scope and aims are and just sort of rambles incoherently from one idea to the next. And is quite frankly bizarre i quote below

How do you solve a problem like Bradford?

What are you on about? The main reason for electrification is that it allows for much quicker acceleration which is vital for a mixed traffic, mixed service density route like the Calder Valley. It will also remain the main route for East to West freight across the Pennines. The only capacity...

How do you solve a problem like Bradford?

Lets be honest, any new alignment that is predominantly tunnel from Huddersfield to Bradford is going to have some quite spectacular issues in construction due to the phenomenal amount of legacy coal mining there. It would not be cheap. And would likely be the first thing on any budgetary...

Who are Yorkshire's big winners and losers in the NPR reboot? I'm genuinely confused.

True, but you are restricted by alignment and number of stops. Electrification would certainly improve things significantly. Also if you are driving from Bradford to the centre of Manchester at peak times its going to be an even lower average speed than that!

Who are Yorkshire's big winners and losers in the NPR reboot? I'm genuinely confused.

in what way is bradford poorly connected to its neighbours, certainly not Leeds where it has i think 4tph from interchange alone and 2 plus an hour from forster square. It gets decent connectivity to Manchester, though this could be better. This wont be improved by adding a through station...

Who are Yorkshire's big winners and losers in the NPR reboot? I'm genuinely confused.

There will not be a new fast line for this, not a chance. That announcement is just politician noise, then as it is now. Bradford already has a surplus of cheap, low rise, low quality urban land not far from both its current stations, demolishing an active industrial area is probably the worst...

Who are Yorkshire's big winners and losers in the NPR reboot? I'm genuinely confused.

It really isnt an issue, it allows for a decent dwell time for some quite high turn overs of passengers whilst the driver is changing ends, its hardly overly restrictive considering things like dwells for TPE services in Leeds when there is a large change over in passengers. The only real issue...

Who are Yorkshire's big winners and losers in the NPR reboot? I'm genuinely confused.

I think you are probably severely overestimating the business case that has been put together thus far for a station. The council have not really been pushing for this option, just for a piece of the NPR pie in whatever form it is. Unlike the tram, which at least saw some consultations, i...

Who are Yorkshire's big winners and losers in the NPR reboot? I'm genuinely confused.

The calder valley line doesnt have the capacity for an extra 2, 3 or 4 services an hour. Leeds certainly doesnt so there is no point sending trains on a through route as they wont be able to get any benefit. And which in that case they might as well terminate at an existing terminus. And if...

Who are Yorkshire's big winners and losers in the NPR reboot? I'm genuinely confused.

I totally agree with this. At the end of the day if you are spending hundreds of millions to save 5 minutes, however you are then spending 5-10 minutes extra walking somewhere, you have no net benefit and possibly a loss. Bradfords conflicts on approaches are hampered more by the Calder Valley...

Who are Yorkshire's big winners and losers in the NPR reboot? I'm genuinely confused.

To be fair it was mostly rail fans with reversal anxiety suggesting a new station. I just floated the idea to my wife (who had no care or knowledge of railways) as " 100s of millions of pounds to walk 350m further for no other benefit for getting to Bradford" and her answer was thats stupid...

Who are Yorkshire's big winners and losers in the NPR reboot? I'm genuinely confused.

I assume in this when you say East you mean west. And if you move the entrance to Leeds station 350m west, and have a barrier between them (road, river, canal) yes it will be less attractive. Certainly not something to put in the benefit side of things. This station location would be indeed...

Werrington (ECML) diveunder could have been done better

The line speed on the fasts at the Werrington are 125mph on the fasts. This means you would need an absolutely massive "box" with which to get the gradients in, also a 3 line wide box would be very expensive. Groundwater conditions in the area were also very difficult making construction even...
