Should schools in the UK be fitted with air conditioning?

It would be interesting to see just how many days there have been so far over the last 40 years where the temperature has reached “intolerable” (as opposed to mildly uncomfortable) level over a sizeable portion of the country excluding the period 15th July - 31st August as the majority of...

    2026 UKR railtours

A fair proportion of people on most tours are as interested in the route as the destination. This would plug the second biggest gap in my “loco hauled” map so If be on it like a shot, Bognor or no Bognor, if I weren’t already committed to be somewhere else.

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

Please enlighten - what on earth is a library school bus. School buses and mobile libraries I can cope with, but a combination of the two seems odd.

Heatwave 22-27 June - effect on the UK Railway

Isn’t the actual advice “avoid all but essential travel”, which is a very different thing. OK, people’s interpretation of essential will vary (as indeed will the “neutral” essential hurdle) but it makes it pretty clear to most that they’re taking a risk by travelling.

Should trains have yellow rear ends to reduce collisions?

While there may not be any passengers in a train of empty freight liner flats, there’s still going to be a problem if something hits it. There’s a danger inherent in starting to expect something that can’t be present overall.

Heatwave 22-27 June - effect on the UK Railway

But there are plenty of people whose travel fits into none of those categories (a lot represented on this forum, for a start). A lot of people can vary how they get into work (or indeed whether they do so at all). To a certain extent it is also covering the operators’ backs. In this part of the...

ScotRail to introduce £10 minimum fare for those not buying before boarding

Mr Bumble’s words come to mind…. Why would anyone pay a £10 fare in advance when they can pay (say) £1.50? No reason at all, so no need to have the ticket purchasable via TVM (in exactly the same way as other esoteric tickets aren’t sold that way). As for not being advertised - I don’t know what...

    Change here for London?

The one place where it might actually be practical to do this in the medium term would be in connection with a Chiltern connection to Old Oak Common. I'm sure someone will supply lots of reasons why it wouldn't work but, given the relatively poo onward connections from Marylebone, it might...

Should car accidents have more prominent reporting?

It may just be my invalid impression, but it seems to me that when road accidents do get reported on, it’s with a subliminal message of “it’s tragic but these things happen” whereas with rail there’s a greater emphasis on cause etc - without stressing that the reason behind the difference is the...

    Change here for London?

The thing is that, in general, the times when there is the greatest pressure on line capacity are also those where there is greatest pressure on on-train capacity. You terminate a “branch train” short to free up a path into London and the have to add a train in to pick those passengers up as...

Largest stations without a convenient pub

Ryde Pier Head is a bit isolated for obvious reasons. Didn’t find anything at all of interest near Ebbsfleet International.

Largest stations without a convenient pub

Are Port Sunlight and Bournville still “dry” towns? I believe Saltaire no longer is. Actually, was Lever a teetotaller like Salt and Cadbury?

There was always one at the bottom of the station approach.

Altnabreac station and the various legal disputes around it

Assuming the landowner was the Duke of Sutherland, there wouldn’t have been any pressure - it was to all intents and purposes “his” railway.

Altnabreac station and the various legal disputes around it

Though a landowner could easily have made it a condition of construction so that they could build a hunting lodge and then not got round to it for a while (or even a generation).

    Current large road building projects

The other difference is that in general in this country, large scale projects such as tunnelling in the main will only improve something that is already possible but sub-optimal as opposed to making something possible / viable in the first place. Compare that with what tunnels in Norway...

    Enduring anachronisms

I assure you there’s a vast difference between distinguishing between two almost identical icons on a small screen and both hazard perception and reading signs etc when driving. If you’re trying to read Google Maps whilst driving, there’s definitely something wrong!

Reopenings - the positive narrative the railway industry needs !

Although in this case the status quo isn’t much of a guide to the future in that by the time any reopening happened it would affect a completely different cohort of students who’ve choice of study location count have been influenced by very different priorities to today’s cohort. What is...
