    Enduring anachronisms

No idea how to quote from the other anachronisms thread - about the share prices. As with legal notices, road closures etc, one positive thing about publishing them in print is that it leaves no doubt as to what official information was available at what time. Anything online can be hacked and...

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

Responding to the share prices in the other thread.

    Enduring anachronisms

Far more of them in recent years than 40-50 years ago. Suspect in many cases that it’s not just the car that’s.getting “laundered”.

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

Part of the problem being that leading a party is like nothing else - including leading a country. In fact, except in the most favourable circumstances, those two positions almost certainly pull against each other.

Heatwave 22-27 June - effect on the UK Railway

Yes - a bit more difficult for annual tickets (as is remembering to claim those days once the ticket has expired!). Easy enough to say “take the ticket to any ticket office before the expiry date and it will be exchanged free of charge”.

Heatwave 22-27 June - effect on the UK Railway

What I find disappointing is that, while there have been plenty of announcements about tickets for Wednesday & Thursday being valid for travel on Friday, there is no information given about period ticket holders (be it season, rover or anything else) who are being told not to travel on 2 days...

New Go-op train service between Swindon, Taunton and Weston-super-Mare approved by ORR - Access Rights now lapsed

Indeed - the problem tends to be that too many people (when “speaking”) equate “listening” with “agreeing with me”. In this case - the idea was probably worth listening to but was probably allowed to rumble on for too long - especially as its various stages suggested that those responsible were...

Even more so, one whose party loses an election, remains as leader and serves a further term after the next election. Wilson possibly the most recent but it used to be the norm back in the 19th century. Strangely enough, wisdom comes through setbacks and someone who loses isn’t always a “loser”.

    Tickets sold by Signallers

Strictly speaking, if you put the eggs out with an honesty box before your shift starts and collect the rest / result after it finishes you’re not carrying on any business during working hours (after all, they count be outside your home). If there is a contractual problem it might arise from the...

Re–calulating mileages after closure/abandonment of original routes?

But enough to encourage a little local “enterprise” - add in the army of collectors of railway memorabilia and it’s hardly surprising they “disappeared”.

    What made you happy today?

Getting home with seconds to spare before the storm broke. Haven’t experienced one like that for years and boy, was I glad I could watch it through a window!

Re–calulating mileages after closure/abandonment of original routes?

At least one issue would be where to draw the line. The “lawn” at Paddington was extended some years back meaning that the GW “0” is now several yards behind the buffer stops. Theoretically virtually every milepost on ex-GWR metals therefore “needs” re-siting; but is it really worth it? All...

Bristol Parkway still showing departures towards Cardiff from London…

Much of central continental Europe has a similarly wide temperature band to cope with. What they haven’t had (yet) is that much high-speed rail.

    GWR Class 165/166 Turbo Diagrams

Thought that given the prevailing unit availability sending three sets to Oxford was a bit profligate. That explains it.

Scottish Top and Tail Passenger Services

IIRC 37s were trialled at the beginning and were presumably found to be overpowered or couldn’t be released as easily as the 27s.

The push-pulls were (normally) 27/1 at one end and 27/2 (for eth) at the other. Presumably it would have worked with 2 of either but wouldn’t have been desirable.

I’m going to be the youngest person to visit all railway stations in Great Britain

Some concrete suggestions as to how to approach the big task, now you've got your "home patch" sorted. 1. Look at a map and mentally put on the back burner all the far-flung areas that are realistically not going to be able to cover on your own while you're still so young. That basically means...
