Heatwave 22-27 June - effect on the UK Railway

Unsurprising really. Like humans, you can overwork equipment for a while, but not for ever.

Are TfW obliged to call at any stations outside Wales?

I don’t know why the services are cancelled but all of these could be ongoing issues resulting from the heat: 1) staff absence. 2) quantity of unserviceable units 3) infrastructure issues - though unlikely to be the case here as other services are running. My point is that knock-on effects don’t...

    Enduring anachronisms

Interesting to know what would have happened if the post code system ( and the centralised sorting that it accompanied) had been delayed by about 10 years so that the Waverley Route serving the Tweeddale postal area was already closed. Given that TD1 1AA is in Galashiels, I assume that's where...

Are TfW obliged to call at any stations outside Wales?

I would agree that there is no justification for TfW basing its priorities on which services are actually in Wales or not. However - to say it should be providing an equal service to all parts of the network is also at best a matter of dispute. If they know that they are going to be unable to...

    Change here for London?

And it is of course useless if there's nothing to join to (ie your branch with through London service justifies 4 coaches only - thus only utilising 1/3 of the capacity of a path onward into London - but all the other trains are already full length and basically need to be). Adding coaches at...

    Trains in hot countries

This is a key element - I think it is the Hungarian railway timetable where the "guaranteed skeleton service" is indicated in the PDF timetable. I've never been quite sure whether the symbol is a snowflake or a blazing sun, but the message is the same - this is the basic service which will be...

Trivia: furthest distance for a re-sited station compared to original location

Or a few yards south of Belgrave & Birstall, which is what it actually “replaced”

    Trains in hot countries

I would dare to suggest that a) we have generally much higher line speeds and service frequencies (and therefore more continuously welded rail and b) have a tougher safety regime. Apologies if any Slovaks wish to take issue.

    Enduring anachronisms

Similarly Keynsham (though It’s just a quirk rather than an anachronism). Part of Bath and North East Somerset but with Bristol dialling and post codes.

    Change here for London?

Though I suspect that the true bottlenecks may well be further out than places like that.

Should schools in the UK be fitted with air conditioning?

And the cold, of course ;though being on the outside of the glass they are less good at that - especially if metal.

Should trains have yellow rear ends to reduce collisions?

Good luck with that. Reduce it and its impact, yes, but until we render ourstt er lives completely redundant there will always room for human error somewhere in a process.

    How do you keep cool?

Not necessarily practical in existing buildings - but is it time to mandate external shutters on new buildings- either simple French style louvres or German style rollers (which are no doubt more expensive but can be operated from inside. They don’t help counter high air temperatures like we’ve...

Should schools in the UK be fitted with air conditioning?

True - though it would probably be November by the time the application came up!

Should schools in the UK be fitted with air conditioning?

Would still need listed building consent (not saying it wouldn’t or shouldn’t be granted)

Heatwave 22-27 June - effect on the UK Railway

If we’re talking about Shrewsbury - Birmingham, BBC says it’s currently 32 degrees - which may be nothing compared with yesterday but it’s hardly “normal”

Heatwave 22-27 June - effect on the UK Railway

My guess would be anticipated shortage of serviceable trains after heat damage combined with expected high demand on more “touristy” routes, coupled with relative ease of providing an RRB service. Another “damned if you do (cancel something to give you wriggle room); damned if you don’t (and...

TfW prioritising Welsh services over lines in England?

Though the last advertised train should run at almost all costs (I would take “advertised” as meaning “shown as running at the point tickets went on sale for the date concerned”.)

    Trains in hot countries

As I understand it, tge issue with the trains is not so much the absolute temperature as the difference between the actual temperature and the normal range for which it was designed (the same applying to extreme winter conditions). To a certain extent the same will apply to staff as well (I...

Heatwave 22-27 June - effect on the UK Railway

Some TOCs are saying almost exactly that (couched in slightly different language of course). I think anyone who is travelling in the affected area and finds the experience suboptimal is in no position to say they weren’t warned. OK, that’s of little consolation if you genuinely had to travel...
