Affordable tickets for the Caledonian Sleeper?

My logic is that personally I find train journeys over around 3 hours ish to be fatiguing. Especially as door-to-door it would be 6 hours. Not much point in slogging it all the way to Glasgow in one shot, only to be too tired to work properly the next day. I also think you would sleep better in...

London travelcard load onto ITSO online (GWR)?

So it's 2021 and you have to visit a GWR ticket office to buy a travelcard, or queue at a machine

London travelcard load onto ITSO online (GWR)?

Hi Perhaps I'm missing something very basic but I've gone through the GWR website a dozen times and not worked out how to buy a London Day Travelcard, then load it onto my ITSO smartcard ("GWR Touch"). I just get delivery options about pick up at station, and postage. Can someone help?

Affordable tickets for the Caledonian Sleeper?

I found a somewhat workable solution which makes the 9 hours of travel for a daytime return more bearable, and allows for a decent 2/3 day weekend. Outbound Glasgow-London - Thurs/Fri evening advance singles are readily available for ~ £35. Best to do it in one go. Return London-Lancaster -...

Affordable tickets for the Caledonian Sleeper?

I wonder if it would be possible to do part of the trip, kip in some type of budget hotel close to a midway station, and then resume the next morning. All for less than £170...

Affordable tickets for the Caledonian Sleeper?

I have an interest in sleeping at night.

Affordable tickets for the Caledonian Sleeper?

Bear in mind that any CO2 emissions from a flight are even more damaging because of the altitude at which they are emitted, so even if the Lowlander was 50g/km and a flight was 75g/km, the reality is that you should probably also x2-x3 the aeroplane emissions. I would happily pay a premium for...

Affordable tickets for the Caledonian Sleeper?

I am also interested in this exact topic. After some research it seems the current most affordable tickets are £100 glasgow-london, and £170 london-glasgow, both needing at least 5 weeks in advance to get those prices. There's also a 10-trip carnet for £165 per trip. My use case is similar...

    Caledonian Sleeper

Anybody know about bikes on the sleeper? I read that if you take a bike you have to get up at 4am to move it when then decouple carriages, is this true? I am planning on travelling Glasgow-London so not sure why they would be decoupling.

Which TOCs will book a seat close to your reserved bike space

Trainsplit looks great for picking your seat but doesn't seem to do cycle reservations at all.

Which TOCs will book a seat close to your reserved bike space

I read recently that Avanti will automatically try and book your seat close to your reserved bike space if you select both in the same booking. Is this true in anyone's experience? and do other TOCs do likewise? For long-distance travel this would come in handy if you want to keep an eye on...

Breaking off peak return leg with e tickets?

Well presumably when you hold the ticket over the gate scanner it sends data to an online database which then checks when/where that Aztec code was used before, and uses that information to decide whether to open the gate or not? If this is the case, as long as the fare rules have all been...

Breaking off peak return leg with e tickets?

So I guess they have programmed the Aztec codes for off-peak return portions so they open the barriers only twice, but the 2nd scan can be many days after the 1st? That would be the logical thing to do.

Breaking off peak return leg with e tickets?

hi, i plan to break mid-way on the return portion of an off peak return. at the mid-way station i will spend a week, and then continue. e,g, A---->C, then a few days later C --> B (break 1 week) B --> A how would this work with an e ticket where the QR code wil be scanned when i start the...

GWR Cornwall Sleeper has terrible timings for Reading customers: possible solutions?

@JonathanH did you feel as though you had a good night's sleep though? Getting off at Reading at 4.30am and then getting on a North Downs train doesn't sound like fun to me.

GWR Cornwall Sleeper has terrible timings for Reading customers: possible solutions?

I understand that the main market is Paddington, however given the thousands who visit Cornwall every Summer for Tourism the currrent sleeper doesn't suit them well unless they happen to live in central London. I wonder if anyone has considered the business case of summer sleepers to cornwall...

GWR Cornwall Sleeper has terrible timings for Reading customers: possible solutions?

They allow boarding at Paddington at 10.30pm so the crew are there already.

GWR Cornwall Sleeper has terrible timings for Reading customers: possible solutions?

I was recently considering the GWR sleeper service to Cornwall. As somebody who lives in the SE outside London, Reading is far more convenient for me to join than Paddington. The timings from Reading are 00.50am joining westbound, and 4am getting off eastbound. In both cases you'd be pushed to...

Departure acceleration GWR IET/Crosscountry from different platforms at Reading?

ok, i guess that explains why sometimes i've been on a crosscountry westwards departure from platform 3, and the departure has felt very sluggish. it has to do a lot of manoeuvring to get onto the fast line.

Departure acceleration GWR IET/Crosscountry from different platforms at Reading?

Is there any difference between departure platform in how quickly an intercity class train can accelerate out of Reading? Both in the London, and opposite, directions. At a guess, platforms 8 and 9 might involve less track switching?
