hi,

i plan to break mid-way on the return portion of an off peak return. at the mid-way station i will spend a week, and then continue. e,g, A---->C, then a few days later C --> B (break 1 week) B --> A

how would this work with an e ticket where the QR code wil be scanned when i start the return leg at station C? would it still open the barriers at A a week later?

The concept is no different to a regular ticket.

The only difference is that staff inspecting the ticket can see more information regarding who/where/when the Aztec code was scanned and marked as 'clipped'.

It should operate the barriers, but there can never be a guarantee that valid tickets will always open barriers!

So I guess they have programmed the Aztec codes for off-peak return portions so they open the barriers only twice, but the 2nd scan can be many days after the 1st? That would be the logical thing to do.

I am not sure what you mean?

Well presumably when you hold the ticket over the gate scanner it sends data to an online database which then checks when/where that Aztec code was used before, and uses that information to decide whether to open the gate or not? If this is the case, as long as the fare rules have all been entered correctly, my journey should be no problem at all.

A simpler system would be to immediately void an Aztec code on the database once it had been used, but that wouldn't even work for a normal return journey, as you need to scan again when you exit at your destination....

You can make multiple breaks of journey. Also you might be required to pass through more than one gateline during the course of a journey.

The only question here is whether a ticket would be accepted by automatic barriers after the break of journey (or before). As we all know, there is no certainty that it would be as BoJ is not always programmed. The format of the ticket is not relevant as this is just as likely with CCST as it is with eTicket. The major difference is that if the eTicket has been scanned a record of the details of the scan will exist confirming when and where that occurred.
