    Differences Between Various Sprinters Acceleration

Starting from Acle eastbound - reasonably level there - 0 to 60mph in 158 seconds!!

    Differences Between Various Sprinters Acceleration

Since between spring and summer 2015 it is understood the engine management chip was remapped to lower power levels. Our recordings of Class 222 performance over the period show a marked reduction on power from appx 560 hp +/- 8 to 10 hp at the rail to a current level of apps 540hp +/- 8 to...

Greater Anglia Bombardier Aventras (Class 720): Technical discussion and introduction

I would have though that the bulk of reliability issues on the Aventura platform have been identified and fixed on the 345/710 fleet, and therefore the 720's should almost be able to run out of the box - unless the fact that they have been sitting around for some time means certain mods have not...

    Differences Between Various Sprinters Acceleration

Interested to note that a 2+6 HST formation has the closest power to weight ratio to a Class 222. The HST is apps 10,5hp/t at the rail compared to between 10.56 and 10.8 for a 222. The 222's seem to deliver appx 525 to 540 rail hp per engine. A 2+5 HST is much higher at 11.6 hp/t and the 2+4's...

    Differences Between Various Sprinters Acceleration

Yes, the 153 i sampled between Norwich and Great Yarmouth -packed like Sardines on a sunny Saturday last May - was dreadfully slow, but it did have fair amount of extra weight to carry that day - having been drafted in to substitute for a missing 755/4.

    Differences Between Various Sprinters Acceleration

Last two voyagers i travelled aboard had one engine shut down. By contrast, a greater percentage of 222's seem to run on all engines.

    Differences Between Various Sprinters Acceleration

I have it on very good authority that class 185 traction computer limits traction power even if you go attempt to go straight into notch 5. I have not heard of any instruction not to use full power. Drivers might be advised to start on lower power notches - due to the fact that notch 4 won't...

    Differences Between Various Sprinters Acceleration

My last two runs out of Loughborough Northbound on 222's have been 0 to 60mph in 60/61 seconds, 0 to 100mph in 2min40/2min50 , and 0 to 110mph in 3min15/3min22.

    Differences Between Various Sprinters Acceleration

I recall Virgin Trains publicity stating 'sports car acceleration' - 0 to 60mph in 60 seconds for 220 and 70 seconds for 221s

    Differences Between Various Sprinters Acceleration

Leicester northbound starts are slightly downhill, so you might get slightly quicker starts by a few seconds there, whereas Loughborough starts Northbound are level for several miles - so a more accurate barometer.

    Differences Between Various Sprinters Acceleration

I haven't recorded any 22x unit doing 0 to 60mph under 60 seconds - even on downhill starts! Anyway, it is no secret that traction power has been altered for fuel economy and reliability reasons, so they are not quite as accelerative as when they were first introduced. Depending on the state of...

    Differences Between Various Sprinters Acceleration

Crazy to think that a 10 or 11 litre diesel engine used for trains produces a are 200 to 250hp - the same power as a 3-litre car engine - though i do get that these outputs are at pretty low RPM compared to automotive use and therefore supposedly more robust and reliable. Does anyone know how...

    Differences Between Various Sprinters Acceleration

Yes, because they had 90mph top speed compared to the other Sprinter Classes - limited to 75mph.

    Differences Between Various Sprinters Acceleration

Getting back to Sprinters - and DMU's - I have recorded a lot of acceleration data and carried out an exercise comparing the best acceleration with as close to a level start as possible. In a virtual 'drag race' to 3 miles the fastest was a 755/4 diesel in 2 mins 42 sec, the slowest was `Class...

Greater Anglia Class 755s (Regional Trains)

No lack of interest. Just that most people are not travelling by train..so much less to report. And of course they do seem to have settled down well - as we hopes they would. I'm glad to have enjoyed the 755/4s in the early days..because the power outputs in diesel mode have most definitely...

    Greater Anglia Rolling Stock Updates

Just checked the Anglia Sectional appendix - Platform 1 is 359m and platform 3 is 291m. Train lengths are: Class 745 - 237m, Class 755/3 - 66m, Class 755/4 - 80m. So for the moment, it looks as though only Platform 1 would be suitable....as a 745/1 and 755/3 would be a combined length of 303m...

    Greater Anglia Rolling Stock Updates

It would be good to start using them on Stansted / Cambridge services - at least to get the WA drivers used to using them on a regular basis - particularly if there are more units available than needed for the current cut-back GE timetable. Plus it would facilitate withdrawal of the clapped out...

    Greater Anglia Rolling Stock Updates

Saw a 745 stabled at Orient way for the first time yesterday (Sunday 29th). I'm not a numbers person - so i didn't bother going to check which one. All I know is that it wasn't a Stanex unit as i saw the yellow first class stripe near the front of the train. An interesting contrast with an...

Greater Anglia Bombardier Aventras (Class 720): Technical discussion and introduction

I'm hearing June is being hoped for as service start date for 720's. But the big question surrounds driver training at the moment. I guess it is possible to train drivers via the internet or in a ventilated classroom 2 or more metres apart. But how will they manage in-cab supervision. Not sure...
