Trivia - Highest Power to Weight Ratio

Interesting how more modern traction electronics can convert more power to the rail. HST power car 2 250hp gross 1,770hp at the rail equals 78.7% of installed power at the rail. Class 68 has 2800Kw (3200hp) gross and delivers 2400Kw at the rail - so 85.7% of installed diesel power. Much more...

Trivia - Highest Power to Weight Ratio

For an identical comparison lets use the power at rail figure of 2400Kw (3218hp) makes that 13h.p/t

Trivia - Highest Power to Weight Ratio

I imagine that with an alumnium body - fewer bogies modern traction electronics, LED lighting etc..the 755 is as 'green' as you are going to get. A 70 second burst of 2600Kw power gets a 755 from rest to 100mph..compared to the previous traction with 'only' 945kw needing around 5 minutes to...

Trivia - Highest Power to Weight Ratio

I make that 1770hp at rail per power car so 3540hp total. And 242 tons of empty weight. So 14.6hp/ton. That is good for an HST. But it lags way behind modern EMUs. Claas 755/3 has 2600Kw (3487hp) to shift just 138 tons of weight =25.26 hp/ton. 0 to 60mph in under 30 seconds and 100mph from rest...

    Class 745 Stadler FLIRTs

The return working was late due to the 18:30 suffering delays near Colchester. That service eventually arrived Norwich 6 late with the Nin90 hot on its heels.

Are they being limited in power delivery somehow? I'm told drivers are applying full power at the controller.

Greater Anglia Class 755s (Regional Trains)

Good to know :D. I was on a 755 yesterday that either matched or beat the Stowmarket to Ipswich Class 86 record of 8 min 54sec - on.leccy of course..and courtesy of clear sigs into P1. Makes a change not to be stopped outside Ipswich waiting for a platform!

In diesel mode - certainly appears that way. Maybe less conservatively on electric.

Greater Anglia Class 755s (Regional Trains)

I had unit 409 yesterday - it seemed to be okay. Unit 421 was running on only three engines - but had no issue making up time despite a 5 late departure from Norwich due to a door fault. I wonder if it was an engine fault or new running policy to save fuel /maintenance.

    Greater Anglia Rolling Stock Updates

I was told weeks back that the issue has nothing to do with software. I am told there are no software or hardware issues other than what may crop up during test running - whenever that starts. Why do people keep banging on about software?

ScotRail HST Introduction - Updates & Discussion

Surely the costs of adding wsp would be covered by reduced late running and less wear on wheelsets/ track and reduced fuel usage?? Or is it cheaper to add a few minutes into the WTT and ask drivers to be more gentle with them?

    Class 745 Stadler FLIRTs

I was on a 755(421) that sounded more whiney than usual yesterday sitting above the front bogie. It was also running on 3 engines only. Not sure if that was due to a fault - or a deliberate decision to save fuel / maintenance. The 745 (006) was accelerated very well. 0 to 60 in less than 40...

GA Class 90 Mark 3 Sets Withdrawal

Yes, you have to remember to taker coats and fleeces off on long journeys ...or you start to cook! Trouble is for some people even 21 deg c is too cold, and for others it is like a sauna. You just cannot please everyone. (whoops - realised we are all OT here - this should be in the 745 thread...
