Thanks for checking. I thought it would be something simple. I was just a bit thrown by getting a "fastest time" which was much faster than the locomotive was supposed to be capable of. I suppose the 90mph (at most) speed limit is one of the things which puts modern drivers off from making a...

I was thinking of trains which were due to reverse in Chester. I've known situations where an incoming train (which was due to reverse) was badly delayed and they brought another train out so that people who are already in Chester could get away. When a train appeared it came from the other...

Is there something a bit off about some of the results that search page gives? If I search for times from Flint to Chester, it says the fastest recorded time was 5.31 by a class 40 in 1970. If that means 5 minutes 31 seconds, that's 135mph over the 12.47 miles. It's 10.53 in the other...

Platform 3B in Chester is great. Some trains stop at the far end of the platform, others stop roughly opposite the waiting room. Sometimes they mix things up so a train which would normally enter the platform in one direction enter it the other way, giving the driver an opportunity to breeze...

The URL works with the station name or the CRS code (YRK here); the CRS URL just redirects you to the name one. There are some other things on the nre.co.uk which do the same thing. It's handy if you don't know exactly what name they use.

Two places which have described some of it are deeside.com and nre.co.uk. Both list the effect of the bridge closure and a simultaneous line closure between Wrexham and Shrewsbury. The former gives more information about what's happening with the bridge, but the latter seems to describe the...

Was the idea of using buses to serve what they could of the Wrexham–Bidston line every seriously considered? The line is due to close for 15 days from Sunday. As a result, end-to-end times are doubled, and nothing serves Hawarden Bridge station. The latter is especially true next week as the...

Looking at Balderton in Cheshire, I see a few problems. 1. Like with some other places, it includes trains which don't go through the level crossing. Here some of the trains it lists get no closer than Whitchurch, 15 miles away. 2. It doesn't take VSTP changes into account. The Wrexham–Crewe...

The routeing guide is often inconsistent in that way. For instance, travel via Doncaster is permitted for journeys between York and Stockport (on maps DO+HO), Cheadle Hulme (ditto) and Crewe (on DO+HD+MS), but not Wilmslow. No idea why. The DO map is only really used for travel via Doncaster...

TfW can't do that. The only anytime return tickets they price are "via Hereford" and "via Shrewsbury" ones which exist to undercut fares via Birmingham. TfW also provide a slower route between Chester and Manchester, theirs with a change in Crewe. There's no discount, though. Either way...

Surely that can't be the longest stretch of track without stations as the section between Lockerbie and Kirknewton is further. I'm not sure that "winner" is the right term to use in this context, but it seems a bit speculative to guess what Lumo would actually do if a member of staff was...

There may be a reason for using 2U here, as they use 2U for fares between Todmorden (and Walsden) and Glasgow, but 2T for ones from Burnley and Littleborough. I suppose they were more worried about people breaking their journeys at the time this was implemented, but I don't know why. They could...

There are a few other restriction codes like this, such as XZ, (used for off peak tickets between Dorridge and Bristol, amongst others). nre.co.uk seems to ignore the field, so people should be able to buy Lumo's tickets easily enough.

Having a 2U restriction means that someone in the government could come along one day and decide that it would be in the national interest to change it to 2V or something. It's a little more complicated when there isn't an anytime return in the system.

The line through Gloucester is closed on 9th August (described at https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/engineering-works/gloucester-area-20260809/) with some trains due to run between Nottingham and Cheltenham. They're supposed to go to Gloucester Yard between services, but I suppose there's a chance...
