What do you call theses fastenings?

Is there any advantages or either type in theft resistance. I know the original 'bent wire' pandrol clip was easily stolen by someone with a sledge hammer.

Which routes in the UK make sense to increase linespeeds to 200 km/h (125 mph)

isnt the big problem going faster that the faster you go the more energy you use, and it goes up quickly at faster speeds. That must surely eat into the viability of going faster. And thats on top of the costs of high speed signalling and the effect on the infrastructure. I think there was a...

Planning a trip across Great Britain - general questions

Trains go up to London, and down leaving London Tracks are called up and down, so you will see names like up fast, and up slow Trains that dont go to London. like Cross Country it is more complicated A Penzance - Edinburgh train will leave Penzance on the up line, but when it gets to York it...

Which routes in the UK make sense to increase linespeeds to 200 km/h (125 mph)

You need stretches where continuous 100mph and faster running is possible over large distances. Which is why Newcastle-London is made for 125. So concentrating on removing any bits where 100mph isnt possible on that route would be the best bet. Far far better looking to increase line speeds on...

    Future of Third Rail

On shared track the centre juice rail is electrically bonded to the other juice rail. That rail is then at full voltage. And the current in it will double compared to 'proper' 4th rail.

    Heritage railway financial problems.

Wont steam engines run on lower grade coal or even briquettes. They are not required to run at 60mph. Re the SVR and leccy. I bet they are paying standing charges at each location. I wonder how many meters they have.

    Future of Third Rail

Remember the District was originally the Metropolitan District and was a child of the Metroplitan Railway. But the best laid plans and all that and the district ended up in the Yerkes Underground group. The district electrified at the Yerkes standard but the Met wanted a different system for...

    International trams

Gent in Belgium is ok but not worth a special trip. But it isnt far from Brussel by train. In Brussel its a bit of a white knuckle ride at Daimant as the tram track go through a roundabout at the end of a motorway. I like the Berlin ones as i am intetested in the differences between the old...

    25/6.25 kV electrification removed

Was the low frequencies' used then something to do with the technology not being available to put rectifiers on trains, and so they could run motors a bit like DC motors without too much arcing? Its why the German speaking part of Europe have low frequency railway electrification even today.

XC dont have a 'London' so the orientation of their trains doesnt matter. As long as the PIS can cope.

    Silly question: Reverse Formation

when a train does a reversing move, as at Newcastle do the tell the passengers who may panic when the train leaves by the wrong end of the station I was alarmed once when a train left Leeds to go to York when it exited by the west end of the station and took the Midland route via Woodlesford...

Architecture The Railways Built - Series 4 for 2023

There were semaphores at the entrances to dock at Cardiff Bay, I think. And maybe where you went from the tidal Avon into the floating harbour at Bristol. But colour lights are common at locks operated by a lock-keeper. Certainly some at Diglis near Worcester on the Severn.
