Thinking about it - English Votes for English Laws would surely apply to any bill focusing on purely English restrictions. This would mean the SNP (and Plaid Cymru) would have no votes, and would increase the Conservative majority (meaning any backbench rebellion would be more important)...
I think arguments that focus mainly on economics are a bit of a red herring. Either way, there is going to be a severe economic downturn due to this - even Sweden saw one. As far as I'm concerned, the main reasons I oppose restrictions are based on the impact on society (particularly the arts...
What makes you think he wouldn't be able to get the consent of parliament? If there was a vote on a "circuit breaker" lockdown, I don't think Labour would oppose it (at best they would abstain) - even if ineffective. The only opposition would be Conservative backbenchers together with...
Agreed - unfortunately I lost family to it (she was in a care home). It isn't that I think that the virus isn't a danger - it absolutely is. I just think that the restrictions are even worse. And I think the current approach - locking up those least in danger while refusing to countenance doing...
But living in a masked dystopia is a problem. Personally, I doubt people will take to wearing them - they will be forever associated with this horrid year, and people won't want to be reminded of the months of misery they endured.
I consider someone wearing a mask, making it impossible to see their facial expressions or understand them, once this is over, to be pretty bad mannered as well.
My biggest fear isn't their use now, but is the growing number of people who seem to want to see their use permanently. They usually claim that people in Asia wear them all the time (which is blatantly untrue), so we should as well. I hate the sight of masks, and while I will put up with them...
It's a worrying rise, but it does seem like most of the increase is driven by students (there are some particularly massive increases in Nottingham and Exeter). The massive question is whether this leads to more infections in the wider community - if it doesn't then the rise is unlikely to be...
But eating or drinking is. It could be a good sales strategy - no doubt staff could point out that if you buy a big bag of popcorn then no need for the mask!
I suspect the above explanation is the case, but a Newcastle-Manors weekly season ticket does undercut both the equivalent metro weekly ticket (by £2.40), and the bus season ticket for that journey (by £6.00). So if someone lived near Manors, worked near Central Station, and didn't like walking...
I'm not sure that Luton could be considered a political stitch up - just because Luton is in the south doesn't mean it has any love for the Tories. Contrast Bolton (which has a Conservative council and mostly Conservative MPs) to Luton which is dominated by Labour.
So it is - that's bizzare. There's only one service which still does the full route, only goes one way, and is on a Saturday evening.
One point of clarificaton - does this rule only apply to stations?
If it also applies to routes, then you could argue that it isn't valid.
That service seems to be split in the timetable now - so that could still be a goer.
Edit: But since the service runs through to Glasgow Central from Stranraer, there are various options involving fewer changes, such as Stranraer - Glasgow Central - Newcastle - Southampton - Portsmouth)
Sadly, I think you can knock one of those changes off, by using the daily Euston - Wrexham General service then changing onto a train for Neston there. But it's still a good shout.
And a much quicker one too - it can apparently be done in under six hours (with the change at Southampton Central not Basingstoke - leaving Ryde at 1340 and getting to Stourbridge at 1938).
Shanklin - Ryde Pier Head - Portsmouth Harbour - Basingstoke - Crewe - Inverness - Thurso would be six also be five (apparently I can't count), though the ferry means this probably doesn't count (and there may be a more efficient route).
I suspect the government would want to incentivise those who get vaccinated - possibly even paying people to do so (though no doubt the extreme end of the anti-vaxxers would see that as part of some conspiracy). They need to ensure it reaches a critical mass within the population.
