    Vaccine Progress, Approval, and Deployment

The problem is that 90 year olds are much more likely to die if they do get the virus. Therefore even though the vaccine wouldn't give them as many years, the vaccine is much more likely to save their life. To use some (very approximate figures): A 90 year old has about a 10% chance of dying...

    When will restrictions finally end?

It should be said that Nadhim Zahawi has categorically denied that the government has plans to introduce a vaccine passport. Obviously they could do a U turn, but it does allay some of my fears.

    When will restrictions finally end?

Mark Harper, chairman of the Covid Recovery Group (aka the Conservative lockdown rebels), has called for a clear exit strategy, the criteria on which government will judge whether lockdown is required, and a provisional end date to lockdown of the 8th March, if we hit the required target for...

    When will restrictions finally end?

Sadly, I worry that they'll get their wish (and no doubt they'd extend it through the winter too, just in case).

    When will restrictions finally end?

Is it possible to screen people for the genes which have are most linked to risk of ICU admission, and bump those up the priority list for the vaccine?

"Clap For Carers" is back again

I couldn't hear any clapping at all here in Newcastle.

Trivia: Stations which sound bad but are actually nice

That also applies to its neighbour of Battersby.

Trivia: Stations which sound bad but are actually nice

Keeping with the North East theme, the name Morpeth may well have a gruesome origin - one theory is that it came from the Old English for "murder path"! However, anyone travelling to this station would find a very pleasant town with a gorgeous river and some lovely pubs. On a similar vein, a hex...

    Media Coverage of COVID -19

I think he did so, specifically in a taxi. He also went on holiday to the Caribbean, which while allowed at the time (I think), wasn't in keeping with advice to avoid international travel. Neither of which are crimes of the century, but definitely hypocrisy of the highest order.

    When will restrictions finally end?

I hope you're right - not least because my birthday is just after Easter, on the 7th!

New lockdown in England, including school closures, announced by Johnson, 4/1/21

I'll trust your figures over mine on this. I don't remember us going over 1,000, but I think I've got mixed up between date of death and date of reporting.

New lockdown in England, including school closures, announced by Johnson, 4/1/21

I expect the figure will be over 1,000, which is not a figure we ever reached in the first wave (and is into four figures which makes it look massive). The long weekend effect will really drive the number up.

    When will restrictions finally end?

They'll find a new justification. I wouldn't be surprised if they used "Long Covid" as a way to justify maintaining restrictions until everyone has been vaccinated.

    Vaccine Progress, Approval, and Deployment

The problem is that I really don't trust him. I don't believe that they'll hit this target, and even if they do I don't believe that he'd actually loosen restrictions (in any meaningful way). They've broken promises too many times now.

New lockdown in England, including school closures, announced by Johnson, 4/1/21

Also, the phrase local area is very unclear. Is it a distance radius? Is it a local authority thing? Or is it a county thing? Though since they're saying "should" and not "must", I assume this isn't going to be a strictly enforced legal thing (unless you're absolutely taking the biscuit).

    Vaccine Progress, Approval, and Deployment

They've done about 1 million vaccinations, and I've seen it suggested that the most vulnerable 1 million people account for close to a third of the deaths. Given we know the efficacy of the Pfizer vaccine is over 50% even with just one shot, then deaths should drop by about a sixth once that...

    Vaccine Progress, Approval, and Deployment

The main problem is that the limiting factor seems to be production rather than logistics. The 2 million doses a week does seem to be a hard limit based on what can be produced. Throwing the kitchen sink at this won't make those factories any quicker.

Bus companies without websites or published fares information

There is one part of the country where all operators show up on an excellent website. Intalink, who are a partnership between Hertfordshire County Council, ten district councils, and the local operators, have a similar interface to Borders Buses. There isn't fare information but the various...

    My thoughts on Boris' strategy

Not necessarily. Many advocates of UBI support it because it means other welfare programmes can be rolled back. Not that I think the Tories will implement it, but there are certainly those on the right who quite like the idea of abolishiny benefits and just giving people a measly sum of money...

    New 4-tier system for England

Yes, the only exception will be the Isles of Scilly, which are in Tier 1. On a completely unrelated note, does anyone know where you can buy a rubber dinghy in Penzance?
