    New clock unveiled

Despite being a literal circle, for some reason the widget takes up a 2x3 rectangle on the screen, meaning a lot of wasted space. I'm assuming there's a complicated technical reason for this but it is very annoying.

HS2 Reset: Evidence to Transport Committee - 9 July 2025 "Total overspend on high-speed rail could be as much as 100%"

Phase 1 was (rather obviously) only intended to be the first phase - I presume the idea was that you can live with a "phase-1 only" solution for a few years until the other phases came online. Maybe the HS2 planners were naive to think that the project would be cut short to just phase 1, but I...

    New clock unveiled

If a particular clock needs to show seconds, presumably it's a simple configuration change to do it. (e.g. if there's a load of passenger complaints). Likewise, if a load of passengers complain that they can't read the time form a distance on a particular clock, the seconds could be removed. I...

Difference between the terms "Guard" and "Conductor"?

A distinction with the role does exist on the DLR. Passenger Service Agents (formerly "train captains") also have the ability to manually drive the trains if required - I think that must be unique within in the UK?

Trivia : Railway questions you were afraid of asking

Obviously any answer to that is just an estimate based on a lot of assumptions, but I'll give it a go. Using data from here (slide 14), UK electrification costs per single track kilometre were between £1m and £2.5m (PDF is from 2019 so I'm assuming 2019 prices). Let's be generous and assume a...

Trivia : Railway questions you were afraid of asking

As others has said, generally they aren't but in some places in addition to just gravity and friction with the ballast there are extra fixings that help stabilise the track. See this thread. Basically long steel plates that anchor the sleeper into the ballast and resist sideways movement. Tend...

Bike thefts at stations effectively 'decriminalised' as BTP to no longer investigate

The other question is how much is actually having a bike to come back to worth? If you live 8 miles from the station, it's only a 30-ish minute ride home, but 3-ish hours walk (or a taxi of course, but then the cost/benefit ratio shifts quickly favour of the bike). GA charge £25 per-year...

Class 810 for East Midlands Railway Construction/Introduction Updates

On the 200th anniversary of the passenger railway, let us pray that maybe they'll be ready in time for the 300th.

    Software/Electronics Jobs in Rail?

Hi all, I'm looking for a bit of a change of career and wondering what there is for me in the rail sector. My experience to date is in low-level embedded software and electronic engineering (i.e. PCB design, not electrical, especially not high-voltage stuff). I'm also a reasonable Python...

Bleakest end of line station in National Rail UK in current use (Trivia)

I wouldn't call Barton-on-Humber bleak. It's definitely basic but it's right in the town, plenty of pubs, shops etc. around.

East-West Rail (EWR): Consultation updates [not speculation]

If they do demolish, are they required to build/provide suitable replacements? I have no idea how these kind of things work.

East-West Rail (EWR): Consultation updates [not speculation]

The Ashburnham Road buildings are quite a way to the east of the existing station footprint. I'm surprised they need that much space. Are EWRs proposals publicly available? If the land was going to be used to make EWR or the station better for everyone then I probably be okay with the disruption...

Proposed new Channel Tunnel services discussion

Is there anything special about the international platforms that means international services *must* use them? It is just the extra length, under the assumption that any international services would need that?

EMR intercity - As bad as xc?

XC services often have to do double-duty as regional trains (e.g. Sheffield-Doncaster) while also serving long distance trips like Birmingham - Newcastle. It's no wonder they're overstretched. EMR intercity generally isn't like that. Also XC services have far more chance of getting hit by a...

    Channel Tunnel capacity

I wonder how much the speed differential could be reduced with more modern locos for the shuttles. If the accel/decel profile can be improved, either by replacing the loco entirely or upgrading the power train, then it might be worth it to get more use out of the tunnel capacity.

    Class 80x / IET Hate

I feel like it's important to note that some things are not fundamental to the 80x series, like the seats - they could have specified any seat - it's not really an issue with the design of the train. Though in practice I can see that it amounts to the same thing. But things like ride quality...

    Restarting HS2a

There's a big opportunity to move existing travel (both people and freight) from roads to trains though. Even with demographic shifts, that's still the case. Environmentally, and for public health, we need to be doing that.
