I think that's the main point I was trying to make about why Pendolini only use the leading pan.

Ok, I already know Eurostars are half sets, I didn't know that one half couldn't be powered by the other. Re Pendos, I probably should have said they don't use the rear pan for that reason rather than both. My mistake on that.

I think the reason for not using both pans on a Pendolino is that the turbulence causes the rear one to occasionally lose contact. I can't be certain on that though. The reason Eurostars can use both pans is that they are long enough and aerodynamic enough that the turbulence doesn't affect the...

The plumes are oil being burned. Most older two stroke engines are designed to burn a little oil.

Just spoken to him, he says he wasn't hearing things, he lives 500 yards from the track and he heard it on the level crossing. It was around 1300, maybe a little later on sunday the 26th. This is a real quandary!

That'd be the Towy Tornado I presume? I think he's hearing things again.

Mate of mine livers in Romsey and says he heard a steam whistle at the weekend. He thinks it was sunday (26th July) but he might be wrong. Anyone know what it was he heard? I can't find any tours or stock moves that were around there then.

The only trains I know that run down this way are Freightliner's sand train and its associated empty moves and the Mendip stone train from the Westbury area. I can't nail down any times for these around the Poole area though. Currently unemployed so Freightmaster is out of the question.
