    Scotland Electrification Framework Tender

£1M/ stkm 'all in' was aimed for in the recent past, but suggestion is that it's rather ambitious now given inflationary pressures. Barrhead for instance is described as 'within the financial envelope for an average of £2 million per stk.' Although I notice the tender doesn't seem to include...

Should level boarding be a requirement for all new trains?

The latest issue of Modern Railways has an interesting series of articles on Scotrail. It covering a variety of topics surrounding scotrail and the devolved aspects of NR, but the interesting area for this thread is the following quote: This may work to pave the way for those other than Stadler...

Ex LNER (and Grand Central) Mark 4 sets for TfW

Or some sort of Bimode depending on if electrification gets anywhere.

Tree 'Punctures' Train Near Arrochar (23/11)

Potentially you're thinking of this? https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/scotrail-class-158-tree-strike.217713/

UK switching to electric vehicles discussion

Buttons on the steering wheel. Similar, incidentally, to modern Paddle Shift Ferraris. I agree particularly on roundabouts, the physical, stationary stalk is clearly the superior method.

Do trains ever slide past red lights?

http://live.ezezine.com/ezine/archives/759/759-2023.11.20.09.55.archive.txt 1701049659 There was a reference to the possible fitment of DVRS to the HST fleet in the minutes of a Scotrail board meeting back in March, but I've not found anything to suggest this is going ahead.

DB Class 60s to be withdrawn

    That's an intriguing thought!

    Garage use?

Was this development in Arizona by any chance? :D Can't think of anywhere I know in the UK where we have a big garage and large drive for off road parking.
  9. Speed43125

    HST coach disposals

Probably not unreasonable to suggest either given the state of some of those ex-LNER/EMR unrefurbished coaches when they were still in service a few years ago.

Potential up to 2,000 job losses at Alstom Derby

The LNER CAF order was €500M for 100 vehicles, including the maintenance contract. But they're more complicated power supply wise and essentially a new design. Make of that what you will.

Dutch start-up proposes cross-channel service to compete with Eurostar.

Big can of worms over on an airliners.net thread going into that already! It's glaring by omission that the article makes no mention of discussions with GetLink or any infrastructure provider about finding the paths for this. The whole thing seems little more than an idea at this stage.

Potential up to 2,000 job losses at Alstom Derby

AIUI, the passenger 'coaches' in the Amtrak Avelia's are in fact New Pendolino based. Does anyone have any idea what other firms, if any, are based at Derby and directly rely on the train factory?

Virgin set to propose new cross-channel service

He bought Necker Island in 1976 ie. Before even Virgin Atlantic was founded in 84. And I dare say a decent chunk of this forum has never bought a record!

Altnabreac station and the various legal disputes around it

Indeed, one of the articles seems to show an artic in the image! Something like that travelling up and down a remote track may well do undue damage compared to the other traffic seen up there.

LNER announce CAF fleet (Class 897)

As mentioned elsewhere, the AT300 platform is set up for odd numbers of carriages in it's formations. There would have been additional R&D costs for a hypothetical 10 car unit that the order would need to cover.

Will there be another UK freight hub after EMA (assuming it reaches capacity at some point), and, if so, where will it be?

This was what I was going to mention. For non parcels/logistics traffic it seems reasonably well placed to harness lower overheads. Which of course is reflected in the use of low capex A340s in the short to medium term.

A HST to be used in Mexico?

43007 and 43378 both still at Yarmouth Vauxhall sidings as of Monday.

how would you build a modern steam/non-electric train?

Alternately something like a Diesel Mercedes w123/W124 which once gotten going will keep running with no outside power until they run out of fuel.
  19. Speed43125

Retrospective prosecution for fare evasion - has it been successful in court yet?

I think this comparison is unhelpful though. People driving cars with no tax/red diesel are penalized heavily. I don't think necessarily speeding, or those who consistently speed is that useful a tool for this context simply because both that and fare dodging are pretty prevalent and ingrained...
