Manchester - Norwich First Class routing suggestions?

No First Class on EMT 158s if I remember correctly. It's worth noting also that NXEA's First Class offering (for the Liv St-Norwich section) is pretty poor.

    An East Midlands/Northern Rail query

Today the Leeds services seem to be terminating at Chesterfield. I assume the same was true yesterday.

Indeed. IMO Manchester has it right on this one.

    Strangest Diversion

Went around the Ely West Curve once on a westbound Norwich-Liverpool train that *wasn't* avoiding Ely: i.e. it stopped at Ely, ran up to the junction, then reversed onto the loop and went onwards towards PBO. Not sure why.

    First Scotrail Aberdeen to Inverness

Today's 0614 from Aberdeen was made up of 2x 3-car 170s. As someone used to the quantity and quality of stock in the Manchester area, this seemed like a lot -- was it partially a stock movement?

    Co-operation between TOCs.

What about Scotrail/Northern on the Newcastle-Carlisle-Glasgow services?

    What's going on here then?

Ah, I see -- so the system has confused itself into thinking it's merging at Salisbury when in fact it's splitting there.

    What's going on here then?

See attached photo: merging at Salisbury...with traffic from Salisbury?!

    PM Peak TPE Leeds-Manchester Trains

Yep, the 1726 was 3-car yesterday but 6-car on Thursday. Looks like I'll be avoiding it on Fridays from now on! Now if only Northern would double up the 1821 Manc Picc to Buxton... :-(

    PM Peak TPE Leeds-Manchester Trains

A quick question for anyone in the know: Which evening peak TPE Leeds-Manchester services are diagrammed for 2x185 (2x170) rather than just a single unit? I've recently started commuting this route a couple of times a week and would like to avoid the crush where possible. I've only seen one...

    Platform tickets

20p platform tickets were available at Leeds until a few years ago. There used to be a platform ticket machine in front of the manual ticket barriers (which are now automatic barriers). As far as I know these tickets are no longer available. I find it hard to see how the "safety and security"...

Two questions about the 22:00 Euston-Manchester

Thanks for the replies -- the points about running early and avoiding having to provide alternative transport make sense. I see that again it's 7 down at Nuneaton tonight! According to this timetable, it sets down at Stockport at 0026.

Two questions about the 22:00 Euston-Manchester

    1. The 22:00 Euston to Manchester is set-down only at Tamworth, Lichfield, Stafford, Crewe, and Stockport, but not at Nuneaton. I don't understand the motivation for these restrictions -- why not allow this service to be an additional late-night service from Crewe/Stockport to Manchester...

How many trains operating at any one time?

Thanks for your replies. I appreciate that one could reach very different figures depending on the answers one gives to the above questions. What I'm most interested in is how many trains are (a) running a service or (b) preparing to run a service. Perhaps there are ways to get at the same...

How many trains operating at any one time?

I wonder whether anybody is in a position to give an informed answer to this question: During a normal daytime off-peak period, how many passenger trains are operating on the UK rail network at any one time? Would be interested to hear estimates, informed guesses, or indeed official figures!

A new peril - doors closing early!

At Levenshulme, this announcement almost always comically occurs at the same time as a train pulling in one minute late.
