In the Highlands, a battery version for a Georgemas Junction - Wick shuttle would work well, and would also significantly reduce journey times on the FNL. The units could possibly also be good for Inverness -Elgin/Dingwall local services, freeing up 158s for longer FNL/Kyle services and perhaps...
The 397 is being tested to have some kind of dispensation to run at EPS as it has been seen to run at 125mph on sections of the WCML during testing according to this TPE driver, perhaps the 800 could be certified for the same dispensation.
The IEP is actually faster on electric than both the IC 125 and 225 as the power is much more equally distributed. Admittedly Diesel acceleration is less but this should be negated by the ability to run with electric timings for most of their journey. They might actually deliver faster journey...
Here it is!
Looks great imo, much better than what the line got in the end - but it seems a huge investment for such an old train that a new train like the Stadler Cl. 755 might make more sense if Scotrail felt like spending that kind of cash.
I was on the 1255 last week, which also failed at Aviemore, reliablity is pretty appaling compared to the 170s. I was also on another set in a very leaky and worn MK3 on Friday, its clear they haven't seen much love since leaving GWR.
Just got thrown off the 1255 Inverness to Edinburgh which terminated at Aviemore after being held outside the station for 30 mins. Loud alarms coming from 43148 at the front. If anything has made me doubt the viability of HSTs this is it .
If you right-click on the mock up images and look at their filenames on the browser tab, it reveals something very interesting:

Like TPE, some of the LNER initial testing units from Japan (i think) come with the "standard" grey IEP interior, like what you saw, but NO units will enter revenue service with thar interior. Infact there is an 801 going around with its seats stipped to its frame and carpets removed prior to it...
Would it not be possible to have a battery/trolley bus hybrid that could trickle charge from the growing tram infrastructure whilst in use to increase range?
INV is small but its certainly not little used, considering all its new hub links and that its been running at well over double it's designed terminal capacity for the last 2 years, it get extremely busy in the summer.
Also, any rail link would also be used by the adjacent new town, Tornagrain
Wasn't that part of the original IEP proposal though, surely there might be some remnant of that design that could be re purposed as a mid car rather than an end car.
Although there might be easier options like a modified loco hauling an 801 or any other intercity EMU.
