    Tunnel Re-boring

I've been catching up on the Transpennine thread and there was mention of re-boring tunnels. My questions are how does it work (boring machine?), how long does it take, how costly is it and why isn't it considered more often for locations such as Standedge, Stalybridge and Scout Tunnels? I...

Public Liability and Professional Indemnity Insurance

Hi all, I'm wanting to work on a few rail projects (software). I also want to cover myself in case someone uses many of the maps I've made and then something then goes wrong. One example is tagging a route as W10 but it's actually W8 and a high-cube container damages infrastructure or causes...

    HS2 Phase 2 or NPR

If the government only had funding to fund a single project, which one would you choose and why? This comes after reading a few articles that suggests NPR could be scrapped/deferred. I would choose NPR purely because I'm from the North and it feels quite rare we get as much funding. It also...

    Delays and Headways

I'm wanting to select a train that was delayed to see if it was caused by another train. I will be attempting this by comparing the schedule and actual times and finding any overlaps. The same could be done to predict a delay, so that if train A is delayed, then it would also impact train B...

    Sectional Appendix Process

Hi all, Does anyone please know the process of updating the Sectional Appendix, timeframes, how data gets updated such as the Route Clearances and how the National Gauging Database/RT3973/SoCs fit in? Thanks!

    York Scarborough Bridge Jn

Hi all, I've always been curious why the York Scarborough Bridge Jn goes into a single and the immediately into double track again? The only reason I can think of it that it would reduce the amount of points along the track from four to two.

    Locomotive Clearances Map

I've created some more maps showing DMU, EMU, Stock and Locomotive clearances from the Sectional Appendix. I thought I would share my work so far for a Class 60. You can click on the lines to view the data. Feedback welcome. https://railmap.azurewebsites.net/Public/Class60 EDIT: The website...

    Geospatial Route Viewer

Hi everyone, I've made a little tool that allows you to put in an origin/destination to get information about the route such as electrification, gradient, route availability and a few other things. I learn of a lot of things from this forum and this sort of stuff is the few ways I can...

    5 Mile Diagrams and Gradients

I'm currently mapping gradient data in a huge amount of detail (more detailed below). I'm currently using TRATIM data and then cross referencing them with 5 mile diagrams. In a few cases, they don't match and I'm wanting to determine which one to trust. Where do the 5 mile diagrams get the...

    Train Schedules Y Paths

Hi everyone, How do you tell which Y paths are related to each other? Do they share the same headcode, service codes, start/end dates, schedules start time/location, or end time/location? The feeds that are freely available don't always have a headcode, which makes it more difficult.

    Freight CO2 equivalent when electrified

Hi, I'm currently using 25.7grams per tonne.km to figure out the co2 emissions for a train. Does anyone know or at least know a source for how much a freight train would use per tonne.km if it was electric please? The train itself would be 0 but it'll get the energy from the grid which in turn...

    Lower Sector Vehicle Gauge

Hi, Does anyone please have a good but short description of the LSVG please? On the Sectional Appendix it's typically where W6A has an Asterix (Y*). If I'm correct, loading gauge refers to the top corners whereas the lower gauge refers to the bottom corners? What has an impact on lower gauge...

Working out average gradient for a route

    Hello, I've seem to be struggling to best approach working on the average gradient on a route. Let's say I have a train going on 100miles and I have data the following gradient data. 0-100m: Unknown. 100-104.5m (4.5m): 1 in 47 104.5 - 350m (345.5m): 1 in 800. 350 - 373.4m (23.4m): 1 in -600...

    Scotland Platform Lengths

Hello, Does anyone know where I can find the platform lengths for Scotland please? I can't seem to find them in the Sectional Appendix, either in the Table A diagram or General Instructions. Thanks.

    TRATIM Help

I apologies in advance is there isn't enough information for anyone to answer these. I've received some TRATIM output files but I'm struggling to figure out three of the columns, which I'm suspecting are the company or method used. The three columns are underlined and emboldened in the example...

    Gradient Map and Requests

I previously had a thread showing gradients with a link to a interactive map showing gradients (https://railmap.azurewebsites.net/Public/Gradients). I've started work on more detailed maps and I've attached some maps of more detailed areas, such as Ipswich and Manchester. Is there any locations...

    Loop Lengths

How do they measure the maximum length of a train that can go into a loop? If a loop is physically 400m in length from point to point, would the max train length be 350-380m? How is it calculated?

    Refrigerated Containers

Hi all, Can all locomotives carry refrigerated containers? Does the locomotive power them? Do they have battery backup? What are the things to consider? I know there are infrastructure constraints (W9/W12), but I don't know anything about the other constraints such as the locomotive. Thanks.

    Mainline Map

Hi all, I thought I would share some maps I've made showing all the main lines. Hopefully it's all correct, and not sure if it would be useful to share a zoomable interactive version of it.
