What can be done to improve the safety of user worked crossings?

mods note - split from this thread https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/incident-between-wigan-wallgate-and-southport-29th-august-2026.306579/ When I first walked across Astley crossing I decided to help close one of the road gates to save time for a passing road user and was grateful for the...

TFW - Advanced Semi Flex - ending the journey at Oxford Road instead of Piccadilly

I used to buy Advance tickets to commute between Preston and Manchester. It was convenient for me to alight at Oxford Road in the morning but board at Piccadilly in the evening for a better chance of a seat. I would always by the tickets to Piccadilly anyway so that I could buy both directions...

    Northern Complimentary travel pass

I had my first issue with one a few months ago where a conductor on the Hope Valley line accused me of filling it in using a pencil when I'd actually used a biro as usual. He made me overwrite the details using his pen, which if anything made it look suspicious.

Could RAIB's reliance on the On-Train Monitoring Recorder (OTMR) data for the impact speed be wrong?

The RAIB update does acknowledge the possibility that the collision speed could be refined as the investigation continues. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/collision-between-two-passenger-trains-near-elstow

Journey planners won't detect service for which I hold a ticket

The 0403 TPE service runs via Salford Crescent between Piccadilly and Victoria - I wonder if that causes issues for validating the route as you'd need Salford Crescent to appear on the relevant map(s)

Delay Repay when connection is delayed

If I were TPE I would ask why the passenger chose to remain on the train to Manchester? Even if the connection were missed I'm struggling to understand how continuing to Manchester Oxford Road / Piccadilly could have been expected to get you to Ashton any sooner than alighting at Bolton as...

Ticket marked 'Specified TPE trains & connections only' doesn't use any TPE services

This seems doubly odd because the itinerary doesn't satisfy the minimum connection time in Glasgow (15mins Central + 5mins walk + 10mins Queen Street = 30mins)

Avanti West Coast via Settle (for WCML Bridge replacement next January?)

It seems that unit (805008) is operating Avanti's first Crewe-Holyhead service this morning (https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:L02174/2026-01-05/detailed#allox_id=0)

What’s the longest dwell time that any UK service has at a station en route?

This doesn't beat the OP, but I'm planning to travel on 2W55 1746 Battersby to Metrocentre this Friday - it has a 17min dwell at Nunthorpe and I'm planning to alight there and walk to Gypsy Lane to board the same train.

Show railcard immediately - what are the rules?

I was just being mindful of the experiences in posts #16 and #30 which suggest that railcards can be slow to load in some cases.

Show railcard immediately - what are the rules?

What do we think of this from the railcard terms and conditions? This seems to add a requirement to be able to show the railcard throughout the journey. Clearly this is not always practical for reasons discussed above, but could explain the inspector's approach...

At what stations and platforms are trains allowed to depart early?

A bit of deja vu here - another poster mentioned a similar early departure from Mirfield a couple of months ago, eliciting a similar reply from @Kite159...

    Greek Street bridge replacement Stockport

I think you're looking at a weekend. Northern are running 2 trains an hour between Manchester Oxford Road and Liverpool Lime Street via Warrington Central today: https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/detailed/gb-nr:MCO/to/gb-nr:WAC/2025-08-05/0200-0159?stp=WVS&show=all&order=wtt&toc=NT

Validity of higher priced routing when ticket type is different

If the OP buys the lower priced ticket first, wouldn't the required excess be a change of ticket type, rather than a change of route? Since via Liverpool should already be permitted on route '.' and the issue is instead with the overnight break of journey that is ostensibly prohibited by...

"Train operator only" ticket at a station not served by that train operator

Herne Hill - Leatherhead via Balham is traceable on map HR without doubling back (https://vaildata.uk/routeing?orp=HNH&drp=LHD&map=HR) and without going into London so the Herne Hill-Leatherhead ticket should still be technically valid for Balham-Leatherhead

I'd be interested in one around the North West :)

TFW Holyhead to Chester next week

Joining the dots, Charlwood House indicates that schedule was created yesterday evening, explaining why the service was missing for the OP. https://www.charlwoodhouse.co.uk/rail/livetrain/$37494128/03/04/25

Introducing RailUK Tickets - support the forum when booking your rail tickets!

Not a full answer but initial thoughts - I had a quick look at the routeing guide when you first posted and I think it's because the permitted routes are different from Huyton vs Roby to the split point (e.g. Lydney), so the Huyton-Lydney ticket was not valid on the route given. I guess the...

Almost got trapped inside Leamington Spa station for the night

Just out of curiosity, were you prevented from switching to the 23:07 (00:03 from Banbury) while you were stopped at Banbury? If Chiltern had given you this option, you'd have reached Leamington an hour earlier.

Southeastern guard thinks that Redhill to Tonbridge is a Southeastern service.

I travelled this line last summer with a Southern Daysave. Naturally I had no idea of the staffing arrangements so would have been completely baffled if I had encountered this guard! I'd probably have pulled out the timetable I'd printed from the Southern website showing the 'SN' operator code...
