    The Starr Gate loop goes through the sand pumps and washer. So the modern trams do use it, but only at the end of service

    Not in service, but there was that time Merseyrail kept sending more 507s and 508s to rescue a set stranded on an iced up third rail. Ended up as 508+507+508+507+508+508.

    As said much earlier there is a slight technology issue. CrossCounty don't also operate in the TfL area, while GWR do. At the moment there's no inspection devices that can work with both the TfW and TfL contactless systems

    Perhaps not for TV, but point to point microwave links are still used today. Mainly as the backhaul for mobile phone masts and things like financial networks where satellite delay is unacceptable.

    That's the traffic census, helps the DfT decide where to expand the motorway and trunk network. Since that's not an enforcement check that doesn't apply, so they can pull in batches.

    Don't forget that even today a colour TV licence is more than a B&W only one, so it was in the BBC's interest to push it as much as possible.
