London to Bicester Village reverse commute

My mother got a job offer for a higher position in Bicester Village. The position pays more, even taking into account the increased travel costs. She also tested the commute and is satisfied with the timings. She lives in North London (Arnos Grove, in particular) and she would need to take...

    New Southgate to Peterborough, doubling-back?

One of NRE's suggested routes is to double-back at Finsbury Park, to catch the semi-fast service with first stop Stevenage. Is this double-back allowed or should I only go north from New Southgate? Just wondering as this double-back route is only 10 minutes longer than going to King's Cross...

    GN Cambridge/Peterborough trains stopping pattern

This is something I have never gotten. The stopping trains stop at Finsbury Park, Potters Bar, Hatfield and Welwyn before stopping at all stations. I understand that Finsbury Park is a good interchange with Moorgate services and that Hatfield and Welwyn have a good amount of employers. But...

    Highbury & Islington RPIs

Lately, I've consistently seen RPIs in the passage leading to the London Overground platforms at Highbury & Islington. Now, for some reason, they insist on seeing tickets/cards when passengers change from the GN/Victoria lines to London Overground, but surprisingly not for the passengers...

Arnos Grove to Streatham Common tomorrow

Considering the situation with a lot of Southern trains being delayed or cancelled lately and the fact that I have a job interview tomorrow morning close to Streatham Common station - I'm doubting the advice from TfL's journey planner as it seems to ignore cancelled services. The route it...

HS2 and the ECML major stops

Will HS2, in any shape or form, improve links and journey times to Manchester/Birmingham from ECML stops like Grantham or Newark? If so, how? Just wondering, as HS2 seems to benefit the London area and the WCML (among others) but I haven't seen much about the ECML.

LM's ticket inspections and Oyster readers

I boarded the LM train from Harrow to Euston today. A staff member asked for tickets/passes, so I got out my Oyster card, only to have it not read by an Oyster reader. While ticket inspectors on operators, like GN, read your Oyster. Why was this the case?

Arnos Grove to Redhill - 5 days a week

What's the best ticket combination for this? The hours will be 7:30am-4:30pm and the workplace is a few minutes walk from Redhill station. Simply Oyster use is overpriced, so I think I will need a paper ticket for some portion of the journey. Any help would be appreciated. :)

    New Southgate-Hatfield-Welwyn Garden City-New Southgate

I am going Monday morning to see someone just outside Hatfield station then go to Welwyn Garden City later on in the day. My closest station is New Southgate, so I won't need to take any fast trains or cross central London. I would need to arrive at 9am sharp at Hatfield station where I will...

Woking SWT services take 1 hour to Waterloo?

I was of the impression that it takes 24-30 minutes on an express service, but according to NRE's departure boards, a lot of services take about an hour from Woking to Waterloo, including the faster Exeter and Portsmouth services. That contradicts what the commuter guide says...

Trains which depart earlier than scheduled

How common is this? I saw this a couple of times on GN when I arrived in my local station. I look at the departure board and see "Welwyn Garden City - 13:34" then "Expd: 13:31". Once it arrives, it departs 1 minute later, departing earlier than scheduled.

    Network Rail Grad Scheme

Having graduated with a 2.2 in Economics and being a rail enthusiast, the Network Rail Finance Grad Scheme sounds very interesting. :) One problem, though, is that there will be a placement in Manchester for a while and then the majority of the work would be done in Milton Keynes. This would...

    Trivia: One way only services?

In the shoulder peaks, there are semi-fast GN services from King's Cross to Welwyn Garden City (WGC) which stop at Finsbury Park, New Southgate, Oakleigh Park, New Barnet, Potters Bar, Hatfield and WGC. However, there are no such services going the other way, oddly. Are there any other UK rail...

    Doubling-back

Is this allowed? Seeing that NR has the most varied stopping patterns I have ever seen, I wouldn't be surprised if there were passengers who would take the first train and double-back. Some examples: 1). Taking the Cambridge Cruiser to Cambridge and taking the GN train southwards to Foxton...

    Weird train-related dreams

I've had many weird train-related dreams in the past and I just had one last night. Several gems: 1). There was a Jubilee Line extension north of Stratford and the station had the futuristic look of Westminster and the platform hallways of Holborn. The area itself wasn't east London but more...

    Inner suburban stations neglected

As a regular commuter, I have noticed that GN local services from Welwyn/Hertford North to Moorgate are very much neglected, compared to outer suburban services. As a passenger, I feel disheartened and a bit ripped off that the GN locals have old and dirty trains (while the fast trains look...

1st class if standard class is actually full

One time, when I was waiting for a train to New Southgate at Finsbury Park, the train which arrived had both 1st class and standard class. Standard class was completely full and I was very lucky to be able to get on. But for future reference, should I be in that situation again, would it...

Hadley Wood to Welwyn Garden City future Oyster plans

Hi, I'm new here :) Govia promised that they would endeavor to extend oyster from Hadley Wood to Welwyn Garden City by the end of this year. Extending Oyster to Gatwick didn't seem to work out, so I'm asking - are the plans for this Oyster extension likely to happen this year or not? I'm...
