I boarded the LM train from Harrow to Euston today. A staff member asked for tickets/passes, so I got out my Oyster card, only to have it not read by an Oyster reader. While ticket inspectors on operators, like GN, read your Oyster. Why was this the case?

What's the best ticket combination for this? The hours will be 7:30am-4:30pm and the workplace is a few minutes walk from Redhill station. Simply Oyster use is overpriced, so I think I will need a paper ticket for some portion of the journey. Any help would be appreciated. :)

How common is this? I saw this a couple of times on GN when I arrived in my local station. I look at the departure board and see "Welwyn Garden City - 13:34" then "Expd: 13:31". Once it arrives, it departs 1 minute later, departing earlier than scheduled.
