Having graduated with a 2.2 in Economics and being a rail enthusiast, the Network Rail Finance Grad Scheme sounds very interesting.

One problem, though, is that there will be a placement in Manchester for a while and then the majority of the work would be done in Milton Keynes.

This would mean I would have to do a reverse commute, as I live in north London.

Is reverse commuting common in Network Rail?

Not quite sure what a reverse commute is, unless you mean against a primary peak flow. But yes, a lot of people in NR (and other companies) commute to MK from south thereof.

I mean the traditional commute is to London and the reverse commute is away from London. Not surprised about the advent of reverse commuting because there are good employment centres outside the M25.

Supposedly more people commute to MK than from it. Though you might do well to think about living there, quite cheap housing and a perhaps surprisingly pleasant place.

I would love to move outside of London but at the moment, I have family ties in north London.

But MK is one of the many possible places I would consider for a future house.

In the case of Hatfield and WGC, I'd say you're right, at least from my area. Just a 30-35 minute direct train and since the peak flows are on the faster trains, the slow trains are pretty much empty.

But with MK, I would need to go with the peak flow for the Arnos Grove to Euston leg before I start my main journey. It is likely that the MK to London services are as rammed as the other way, although I don't know for certain.
