    Smartcards

This is a very interesting article about smartcards: https://thebeautyoftransport.com/2017/07/05/the-regrettable-death-and-strange-second-life-of-the-integrated-transport-smartcard/ It might be a little out of date now, in view of the improvements mentioned above effective from 18 December, but...

    Smartcards

For the passenger, Smartcards will have little appeal until you can use one smartcard for everything.

    Smartcards

I also just tried to book a journey starting outside Southern's area, on Southern's website, where my Southern key is registered. It didn't want to know, said I could only have a paper ticket.

    Smartcards

I have two "Key" smartcards, one issued by Southern, the other by Bluestar bus. I just tried to register both on SWR online and in both cases it told me the ISRN is incorrect. Google tells me this merely means the number on the front of the card, so clearly SWR is currently still only allowing...

    Boundary Zone tickets

But to my way of thinking software that doesn't make much sense. Out of the small number of passengers seeking to buy a boundary zone ticket at Totton, what percentage would be wanting a ticket FROM Boundary Zone. Almost nobody, I would think, yet this is the option available from the large...

    Boundary Zone tickets

I had a look at SWR machines today in relation to boundary zone tickets. Totton station has two machines, a larger older looking machine which takes cards and cash, and a newer, slimmer one which is card only. Both seemed to offer boundary zone fares though with some inconsistencies. On the...

East Croydon to Aldershot, Return from Blackwater

Sorry, that was a typo, I meant to type £12.80.

East Croydon to Aldershot, Return from Blackwater

As per the thread title, could anyone help me with the cheapest tickets for this trip please. I'd be travelling on a Saturday with no railcards or season tickets. The best I've come up with so far is £12.40 return East Croydon - Blackwater, plus single Ash - Alderstot £2.70, totalling £15.50.

PlusBus tickets and the lack of bus driver knowledge

Maybe PlusBus tickets aren't as commonly used as we think. Advertising seems to be patchy, and when booking online it's easy to miss the bit about including PlusBus in your ticket, so you have to know in advance what it is, and that it's available for the place in question. I've never tried to...

please help with zone 1 fare

The X68 will definitely be the cheapest option, but don't expect it to be particularly quick or comfortable. I used it for a while commuting from Croydon to Holborn - it would probably be a slightly better experience at the times the OP would be using it, assuming he can get the last bus from...

    Ticket on Departure

I've signed up to TPE, and so far it's been a joy to use. I hope they don't soon change it to a new "improved" interface!

    Ticket on Departure

Sorry I should have said the ticket was for today, so it's all in the past now.

    Ticket on Departure

Going back to my original post, there seems no logical reason why I wasn't offered collection on this booking. I reported the matter to Virgin Trains East Coast, but have not yet received any response.

    Ticket on Departure

I often both book and collect in advance, then I know I've got everything I need.

    Ticket on Departure

What I hate about all the new booking websites I've used is they force you to select particular trains, even when the fare you're booking doesn't require this. With classic WebTIS you don't have to select a train unless required by the fare to do so, thus it's clear whether you can travel on...

    Ticket on Departure

So which websites still use the classic WEBTIS interface? I find it by far the easiest, yes all the sites that used to use it - Southern, Southeastern and now it seems East Coast are changing to something almost unusable.

    Ticket on Departure

I booked it eventually using the "new" site, though in all other respects the new booking site seems a complete car crash, comparable to Southern.

    Ticket on Departure

I've been trying to make a booking today on Virgin Trains East Coast website, but when I get to the delivery bit, only Special Delivery is available. The ticket is Totton - Branksome return, Totton definitely has facilities to collect the ticket. As a test I tried another journey of single...

Southampton to Emsworth, Return from Portsmouth

I need to travel from Southampton to Emsworth, then return from Portsmouth Harbour the same day. As far as I can see a Southampton - Emsworth ticket is valid for break of journey at Portsmouth Harbour - can someone please confirm? Are there any cheaper ways of doing these journeys?
