I don't know much about 159, 442 or Desiro but I know that generally newer trains are much nicer to drive than 15X series despite the occasional computer problem they tend to be more comfortable, spacious, ergonomic, cleaner, quieter, faster and more private. The computer has its plus points too...

It is so bloody slow when it's all-stops. I worked out the average speed from one end to the other is just 23mph! That is what makes it depressing to me above all else
Yes it is due to increase in April this year but with some TOC's at least the pay rise is usually late it usually takes several months to be negotiated with the Unions
Just for good measure, on the heritage scene it takes 55 minutes for a train on Bury ELR to get from Rawtenstall to Heywood. 12 miles. An average speed of just 13.09mph!
