Yes there used to be a second station in Northallerton, by Low Gates Level Crossing, the building that currently houses Court Homemakers is the old low level station on the Leeds & Stockton. Charlie Browns/Motorpoint/whatever it used to be called was in the goods shed.

The TOCs might want to insert more padding but it's NR who do the pathing... and if they say that adding x amount of padding will reduce the capacity of said line they they probably won't allow it
If you have a ticket to a destination and through no fault of your own you miss the last connection then I think they have to get you there by any reasonable means, as the ticket is a contract between the bearer (ie yourself) and the TOC(s) involved to get you from the origin to the destination...
Unless they are 'Run through points' as found in many sidings, whereby the force of the train moves them across if set in the other direction when coming from a set of sidings.
As a footnote, the points round TATA Scunthorpe are powered and they are changed using a plunger when heading towards...
I took a photo of a pair of 37s departing the other day in full uniform with my ticket machine round my neck as I had just stepped off my train at the turn round!!!
I think it can help having a background interest in the railways, I mentioned it at interviews and at my most recent (and succesful) one, one of the guys interviewing was also a modeller so there was a link if you like between us.
The wife uses one and they are a damned sight cheaper than real fags!! The ones she has use liquid of different flavours and also different nicotine strengths, with a zero nicotine also available if you just want the sensation of putting it in your mouth
Just think if they had kept St Enochs instead of Central... they could probably have done away with Queen St as well and had all services from one station. Would have meant the loss of Cowlairs but then I suppose that won't have bothered them too much!!
I did that trip four years ago and found them to be quite comfy, with deep seat bolsters and highish backs. Mind, I did spend all my time looking out of the windows so didn't pay too much attention to the interior, but I don't have any bad recollections!! I do remember the PIS got confused once...
