I find the most comfortable place to sit on a Mk4 is in the centre of the coach, that way you don't get the incessant bogie noises that you do at the ends. It sounds like you had an HST set with Mk3s on the way back, though I actually prefer the ride of a Mk 3!

erm the Felixstowe passenger service isnt "an awkward isolated DMU / 153" line, what about the East Suffolk line, and the Cambridge/Peterborough services that are allso DMU... it's not isolated!! Wiring the Felixstowe branch and then running an EMU would create an isolated EMU operation.

I doubt it as the ETH index of a 37 is quite low. Most charter sets have a generator van at one end. It might be the 37 was requested to give a shove to help get going, especially if well loaded

When I was at GC on the HST rakes coach D also happened to be the one with the Disabled toilet, so for reservation purposes etc the 180 vehicle with the Disabled toilet was also labelled as D... Anyone noticed the announcement that GC want to go to a full 180 fleet and dispense with the HSTs...

A differential means you can then brake each wheel individually as in a car/hgv/etc, rather than the axle, that way if one wheel locks up the other one the other side of the diff can still be used for brake force... Would need WSP probes each side of course

Added to that, the axles are fixed, so one wheel effectively gets 'dragged' round. What would probably get rid of if not reduce an awful lot would be to fit differentials to every axle. These allow the outer wheel to turn faster and therefore cover the greater distance at the same overall...

Depends on where this happened, if Stroud was the next station then fair enough, but if they could have gotten that ticket then gone another way then the barrier guy was probably correct in selling (or attempting to!) the Any Permitted ticket.

180s used to have awful air con that either froze you or boiled you alive!! 156s are ok as long as you are moving at a reasonable pace!

the 321s on the GE have bells, and the 317s that we had for a few months at the end of NXEA had bells, though they tended to go DUNK rather than DING!

Easiest way to destroy info on a ticket stripe is to have it near a magnet, say on a smartphone case or handbag clasp... Tis the reason most tickets dont work in barriers etc is beacuse they have had it unwittingly near a magnet

with the proliferation of LED signal heads, surely someone could come up with a low energy version that still meets the required standards but that can be run off a battery (or set of them) that are charged by both a solar panel and a small wind turbine that can be either mounted on the same...

I think the concrete ones tend to fall apart after a life of being pounded into the ballast so they go to the recycling sites such as Whitemoor to have the rebar removed
