    start from scratch...

I've had a go, it takes a different approach with a focus on quick journeys between major population centres and coverage of the country where feasable. Freight would only be allowed on secondary routes and there would be a few major freight only lines linking ports and major cities. Express...

path of a 'ghost' railway in W London

Thank you, swt_passenger, I have wondered what it is as it's local. In lots of places along it are the same railings that welshmikeymike talks about.

    Accident in South Africa

I did not see Railjet's post as I was composing mine and the link in the OP didn't mention this.

    Interrail Trip - Summer 2011

I recently did a short Benelux Interrail trip and stayed in hostels spread across the region: Brugge, Amsterdam, Liege, Brussels and Luxembourg City. I didn't plan many of my moves so as to be able to just jump on board and take convoluted routes via places I wanted to see. As the railways in...

    Accident in South Africa

Sounds odd that there could be that much devastation then without another train hitting it as you'd assume that the carriages would be stationary. Looking at their site and prices it must be an incredibly luxury train!

    Your Camera

Pretty new to this but obsessed with the 60s/70s glass, mostly M42 mount. I use a Canon EOS1000D with amongst others: Pentacon 30/3.5 Pentax Super Takumar 50/1.4 Pentacon 50/1.8 Zeiss Jena Tessar 50/2.8 Zeiss Jena Pancolar 50/1.8 Helios 44-2 58/2 Pentax Super Takumar 135/2.5 Pentacon...

    Asylum Seekers Myth Buster

Interesting find. I do find it odd people from the North East complaining of the numbers of asylum seekers. I'm from West London and have been going up there 4 or 5 times a year all my life to visit relatives and try to explore the area as well as I can. There are very few asylum seekers up...

    Best destination in Europe?

It is! Such beautiful light inside. Liege Palais is also worth a visit, not a particularly beautiful station but impressive how it fits into the hillside. At the top of the hill is an incredible panoramic view and some fortifications with many monuments.

    Best destination in Europe?

A few days ago I came back from Interrailing around the Benelux and would recommend it. Stayed in 5 different Hostels and did a trip from Brugge to Amsterdam, Liege, Brussels and Luxembourg. Took advantage of interesting train routings where I could as well. Stopped off at a few places each day...

    Browser Choice in EU

I am on Ubuntu which came with Firefox by default and was previously using it on Windows 7. It's using about 200MB of RAM with 10 tabs open and using flashblock has helped it stop hogging the CPU unnecessarily. There appear to be no differences in the interface at all. Many people are unaware...

    Competition 405 :: Voting

The problem is that there's some processing of the images done by the uploader which is killing the contrast and colour.

12 on strong and simple composition and exposure. Feels like a glimpse of a HST going fast.

Military-style spy planes 'to be used to target civilians in the UK'

There was news about this a few years ago related to the 2012 Olympics and that being where they'd be used first. There's something very sinister about them and I can imagine a few being attacked either by people who'd had enough or with more sinister motives.

Did Ivo mean in the north or north of the M62 corridor? Could it be somewhere in Glasgow like Helensburgh?

    Station Made Railcards...

Both types can vary as the ink comes off paper tickets especially if it's thin to begin with. The plastic cards you get online can also fade but you have the advantage of only having one piece. I believe if it becomes illegible due to wear you can replace it for free at a station?
