Thanks for the suggestions thus far! I think places like Norwich might be too far from Manchester. Macclesfield and Leamington Spa are nice ideas... I looked at Macclesfield as an option - but I am concerned that there aren't many trains in the late evening as it's on the WCML.

I started one of these threads in the summer and said I might ask about London as well - just researching places to live at the moment. I'd love to live somewhere within 90-120 minutes train journey of London - but in a beautiful location - no more than 3-4 miles from the rail station...

Very interesting chaps - thanks. It's amazing how if you ask around, or do some playing on NRE that these huge fare differences can be found, which makes doing an extra few miles in the car much more worth it.
