As mentioned above, Niedersachsen tickets cover an area West and South of Hamburg, and Schleswig Holstein is North and East. Both cover all local transport in Hamburg.
There are also local day tickets, including one to cover Greater Hamburg.

Yes the Malton - Pickering bus service may be good on Saturday, (not sure if Coastliner still do the Flamingoland deviation but they do stop nearby) but Sunday service is a struggle

I'm not sure of the situation now, but rail card discount was only applicable to the train portion of the journey (well in 1988!!) so I had to buy separate tickets.

Ah, I remember Vienenburg is the border station, so I got a ticket at an earlier DB machine.
