Linz (Austria) to Gorlitz (German/Polish border) - trip report

First leg from Linz to Prague was like travelling on a secondary long distance BR route in the 1960s. Czech railway coaches and loco with a restaurant car, stopping at stations in Austria where noone got on or off but where there were goods sidings with rakes of wagons. Single track line but...

How can the toilets at Euston be improved?

Id suggest the clientale of the hotel and Euston station toilets are rather different. It is interesting to see some European trains have moved away from onboard unisex toilets and have separate male and female ones. Unisex cubicles work best when they also include sink and dryer.

    London Robotaxis

Some people would like to smoke in pubs but society decided the risks outweigh the benefits. The same may apply to driving, thousands of people are killed or suffer life changing injuries linked to driving. If automation materially reduces that risk then society may say manual driving is banned...

    London Robotaxis

Yes, obviously the vehicles are programmed to reflect the laws applying in each country they operate. They are presently being "trained" in London and there have been no reports of any major issues to date although they presently have a driver with them. Unfortunately I don't think we have same...

    London Robotaxis

I wonder how long zebra crossings will last on busy roads. Certainly many in London have been replaced by light controlled crossings over the last couple of decades.

    London Robotaxis

Many people said the same when trains first came on the scene. Driving is a dangerous monotonous job, and around a third of deaths on the road involve someone driving for a living. That robots and AI will continue to replace such jobs is a good thing.

How far ahead should trains be on sale?

Can anyone say how long in advance you could reserve a seat in the 1960s and 70s?

How far ahead should trains be on sale?

For long distance travel bookings should be open 6 months in advance of travel and non-emergency engineering work should also be known that far in advance. If it's not it suggests a lack of a proactive data led asset management system.

Double TGV sets - rear set locked out of use

Presently traveling from Paris to Milan where the rear TGV set is locked out of use. Is this a common occurrence or is to provide extra capacity back to Paris for the Olympics. I seem to recall when I did this route a few years ago one set was dropped at Lyon but present service bypasses Lyon.

How could the UK reduce the cost of large infrastructure projects?

I dont think a number of people on here appreciate the level of detail that was gone into in developing route options given Ministerial directions and environmental constraints. I was involved in station location optioneering on Phase 2. In each city we were looking at over 20 potential options...

How could the UK reduce the cost of large infrastructure projects?

Every project is unique but generally every component has been done before many times over. Back to the idea that projects should be thought of as lego bricks ie taking standard blocks but maybe combining them in different ways as required. Once a project is thought of as bespoke we end up...

How could the UK reduce the cost of large infrastructure projects?

Was not aware of that case but even here the alledged wrong doing happened around 30 years ago and the court case was 20 years ago. As the case collapsed we have to assume innocence as no one was found quilty. 1770969440 No - it was just the process - rural conservative MPs voted against the...

How could the UK reduce the cost of large infrastructure projects?

From what various politicans and senior HS2 people have said there was a lack of understanding of what powers the Act gave to HS2 Ltd. They were surprised (and so was I) that local planning permission was still required for so many aspects and that councils refused to rubber stamp HS2 proposals...

How could the UK reduce the cost of large infrastructure projects?

Do the opposite, pay top dollar to attract the top talent, these are multi billion pound projects that need experienced people to deliver them.. 1770966476 Name a single example of corruption related to major infrastructure in the UK in recent years.

His book is available paperback and well worth a tenner and a couple of hours of anyone's time who is involved in any aspect of planning or delivering a major project.

How could the UK reduce the cost of large infrastructure projects?

The answer to the original question is to give every decision maker a copy of Bent Flyvberg's book "How big things get done" and follow his rules: namely 1) Hire a masterbuilder ie someone who has done it before 2) Get the right team into support them - ie people who have done it before and not...
