In answer to RYS (above), when I worked in the booking office at Cambridge, there was a clause in the conditions of travel that basically said that BR did not have to provide a service at all. Don't know if that's still in the conditions, but if it is, that's the way out for the TOCs.

From reading the above, how about having a livery for InterCity services (a nice fawn colour with a red stripe perhaps) and another livery for all other services (like blue with grey window surrounds). To give the impression it's a nationwide network, have the name 'British Rail' on the coaches...

Looking at the above, he is starting from Whitchurch and going to London via Crewe, thence to Aberdeen or Dundee and back to Crewe. Seems most suggestions think he is starting in Aberdeen.

Above train was cancelled at Stevenage this morning due to there being no electricity on the train. Fortunately, my friend on that train intended to disembark at Stevenage. What surprised me though is that they let it leave Kings Cross in the first place.

Perhaps making alcohol less easily available might help - i.e., supermarkets and the like not being allowed to sell the stuff - so that people do have to go to pubs or off licences to buy it. Or, alternatively, making the supermarkets charge the same price as a pub - with no discounts or offers...
