London to Preston currently takes around two hours ten minutes doesn't it? London to Manchester takes around two hours. Post electrification Manchester to Preston will take around 20-30 minutes. The gap between the total journey times is much smaller than most think.

A good option would be an eight car 319 running Manchester Airport to Preston (via Bolton) splitting with one half always going to Blackpool North with the other half going to either Windermere (providing the electrification of the branch goes ahead) or Lancaster (linking in with Barrow stopper?).
When flicking through the documentation for the new Scotrail franchise I noticed the high(ish) standards that are expected. The new Northern and Transpennine should be expected to match these e.g. bogied vehicles, phase-in of wifi, etc.
How busy has the new route been overall?
Last Saturday I was at Manchester Victoria and noted that there was less than 15 people on the 8pm service to Newcastle. Even for the time of day it was very sparse inside and then they coupled up another 185 set to make it a six car service. There was...
After moving from Bolton to Scotland I have noticed a huge difference between the rail services offered. The worse you would find in Scotland would be a 156 while Bolton has got accustomed to Pacers. One thing for certain Scotrail needs to force to release some 156s and 158s now, they have far...
After looking at RTT I guess I was wrong. Several times now I have seen 221s pass through Wigan North West without stopping and I assumed it was all the Glasgow to Birminghams, maybe I was always at the station at that specific time.
You are unlikely to see many because its more expensive to not split ticket it. Every time I do Bolton to London I split it at Manchester because it works out better every time.

If ran at peak time, between Stockport to Blackpool, it would be well...
Bolton does have the capacity to host a 57 when not in use, either in the sidings or Platform 2.

Virgin has made the same level of commitment to Bolton as it has to Blackpool and Shrewsbury, the difference is the time frame that it will happen...
Moses Gate has only an hourly service Mon to Sat during the day with little services in the evening and no service on Sundays. Its numbers will always be low because of its awful service.
By your figures Wigan has only 25k more passengers travelling long distance, given that Wigan is a...
Moses Gate, Farnworth, Lostock, Horwich Parkway, Blackrod, Westhoughton, Hall i wood, Bromley Cross and maybe one other I am not sure about it. All in Bolton.
It makes good sense to bring them back via Bolton. The Bolton route is currently only two minutes faster on average, but post-electrification when large stretches of the Bolton route will be ready for 100mph running (plus faster acceleration from EMUs), the Bolton route could be 1/3 faster or...
They currently only use the Bolton route for stock movements (221s) in the mornings. The Newton Li Willows route is favoured because it means 390s can be moved without the need for a thunderbird.
Was that on a Sunday / late evening? Most times when returning from Manchester on a Monday to Saturday afternoon its not uncommon to have to let one or two trains go before I feel I can get on.
