Five inch gap in track on East Coast mainline

How big is the gap that the train has to 'jump' at Newark flat crossing?

Media bias: Privatised train fares rise three times faster than cost of living

Hardly media bias. A huge and perhaps the greatest focus of transport is getting people to their places of work. When the fares for these sort of journeys are going up like they are - there is all the more reason to complain. I think most people understand the argument now. Run the railways...

Safest part of a train in a crash

Rear facing seats with high backed chairs in front of you.. Away from emergency exit windows (if they still have them) - due to risk of falling through. I get the idea from the report into the Ufton Nervet derailment was try as much as you can to not fall through the windows if the train...

    Railway Top Gear?

    Beer Gardens To Watch Trains

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=4FErN8kdSpI#t=289s That pub there at Carlton on Trent, Retford way i think it is. Think there might be a pub on the line on one of the fast parts north of York as well.

    Suicide on the Railways

mr. moo - a very moving account; was an interesting account; for a better word. The 'selfish' argument is somewhat bizarre to me. It almost sounds sociopathic to me to see somebody ending their existence as a mere inconvenience to others getting home to dinner / corrie or whatever. I don't...

148mph HST with Valenta...but with MTU?

As the title says :) Whilst the achieved their crowning record with the Valenta engines (I assuming here), what are we to reckon they could do with the MTUs? Faster? Slower? Don't really know? thanks

Fare increases - folk don't like them

It is. In real terms of todays money, the subsidy for BR can be placed around ~£1.14bn, whilst today the subsidy is ~£4bn. Total passenger revenues 1992 --> 2011 up by ~3 times, whilst subsidy up by ~4 times.

Fare increases - folk don't like them

Yes. The only reason I believe it is so complicated, is so that money that is escaping out of the system is obscured. To those watching out for the 'red man' or whatever, this isn't conspiracy talk, this is standard practice for any project that sees public funds ultimately put in private hands...

Fare increases - folk don't like them

Why are they 'far better' ? How have they contributed to increasing revenue? More people use the train - and we certainly can't say that is due to the fares policy! How do they reduce costs? If anything they replicate administration costs with the decentralisation of management...

Fare increases - folk don't like them

I do realise that. I don't know how it takes anything away from my point though. So what is, your alternative....railtrack? Oh wait...

Fare increases - folk don't like them

Fair enough. These are still notable figures when aggregated. Factor in the payments by the government when franchises 'fail to achieve expected revenues' (completely barmy justification ) such as the 50 mill given to Virgin in 2012 and these figures add up to the same salient point -...

Fare increases - folk don't like them

Pal, the railways are subsidised 4 times more than what they were in BR days - from the tax payer. Private monies has not propped up the infrastructure around the country.

Fare increases - folk don't like them

Exactly. The argument that the train operator's profits are small and therefore negligible enough to 'not be bothered' about recouping is completely redundant and has no credibility to it. Let's take east coast for example. They made £195.7 million in profit in 2012. All of which is...

Fare increases - folk don't like them

Agreed. Expecting that a man can live the life of riley on £71 a week is a complete joke. And housing benefit is hardly a joyous payment either, considering it goes to your landlord. Granted, when people start shacking up and having kids on the social, it becomes a more rosier affair and I do...

Fare increases - folk don't like them

Yeah I'd agree. We've had over 30 years of the free market experiment and we know that the big players in the free market - and the government that allows it to happen - will always seek to dominate and manipulate the market place so that it doesn't reflect anything like a free market. I...

Fare increases - folk don't like them

I am not tolerant to rises in fuel either :D Considering you are quoting myself, I assume I think this way, so I'll give you my thoughts on the situation - personally, I believe there should be a not-for-profit government oil company which equally sells energy on the markets against the other...

Fare increases - folk don't like them

Agreed. :) However forceful lobbying can always be supplemented by a bit of moaning on twitter if it gets the rest of the rabble moaning about the same thing. I do not use twitter though, mind ;)
