There are 4 trains trapped between Farnborough and Basingstoke on the down line. The up line seems to be operating again, 5W56 has just been sent up (2 x 444s).
Update: trains on the down now seem to be moving and all blocks removed.
Since it was morning, wasn't there a slightly later train that you could have caught?
I can better that. A few years ago there were engineering works between Farnborough and Woking. Left London late evening and at Woking found the replacement bus to Farnborough. When we got there everyone got...
A few weeks ago. I took a late night train from Lymington Town to Lymington Pier. No one got off at Town and my wife and I were the only passengers to get off at Pier. So it would have been empty except I spoiled it!
Just saw a TikTok video posted on the Basingstoke Gazette website showing a XC Voyager with front end damage after hitting a tree, suspect it is 1M54...
Not sure Waterloo is going to help much, there appears to be no service from Waterloo - Reading today. The SWML is on reduced service due to a landslip between Woking and Brookwood, so a very limited service to Basingstoke.
Looks best to avoid this stretch today, looks like the up fast is now closed too, nothing has made its way past today westbound. A couple of London bound trains have run through the area in the last hour or so.
Unless Wikipedia has got it badly wrong, all 801/1 are 5 cars and all 801/2 are 9 cars.

Just checked with TOPS, Wikipedia is right. So no idea why YouTube contributors would suggest otherwise.
There is a bridge right next to the area where the bank has slipped, see the second photograph in the BBC article linked in the first post. St Johns Hill Road bridge it would seem. https://maps.app.goo.gl/R1agXKRtrReVpgbC9
Looks like the situation has deteriorated, all 4 lines are blocked between Woking and Brookwood. London bound services being terminated at Basingstoke. Doesn't appear to have been any through services since around midday.
