With the recent dip in passenger numbers I have compared average loadings per train between Q4 2013/14 and Q4 2017/18 and they show a fall for every operator apart from South Western Railway. This doesn't take account of any change in length of trains but putting aside the present timetabling...

Why is Doncaster the last stronghold of trainspotters?
While you will see the occasional spotter/photographer at most main line stations, Doncaster seems to always have around 20 people on its platform ends. There were also at least three on Bently station today spotting which given Doncaster...
Today was the first in a long time since I've travelled on this route and noted that it appears to have been virtually 4 tracked all the way from Leeds to the edge of Greater Manchester. Was this the case and when was the additional track lost?
I also noted the section from Guide Bridge into...
Travelling on 14.45 Paddington to Swansea - train announced as having a problem and not going anywhere at 14.47 - told to transfer to train on the adjacent platform and we were off at 14.53.
And you thought the competition was tough getting a job on Britain's railways.
According to a BBC news report http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-43551719 20m people have applied for jobs as railway police, locomotive drivers and technicians with applicants taking tests in one of 15...
Looking at Real Time Trains I see there were non-advertised passenger services from Edinburgh to Dunbar at 00.52, 01.12 and 03.00 this morning with first two arriving back as passenger services at 02.16 and 02.24.
Are these new rolling stock undergoing tests/training or was there some event on?
Does anyone know where you can find train passenger miles/ kilometres for Ulster Transport Authority and Northern Ireland railways - ideally in one place from 1948 to present day?

I was intrigued that a government agency has the following requirements in its expenses policy for its suppliers using rail
"The Supplier wherever possible make use of split tickets, (i.e. for an overall journey from Birmingham to Leeds obtain tickets from Birmingham to Derby and Derby to...
Do any European countries publish their working timetables electronically like Network Rail?
I am also interested in trying to find historic copies of SNCB working timetables ideally from the 1960s/1970s but have never seen any. Were they produced as widely as BR seem to have produced them...

Will be in New York in September for a few days - any suggestions for transport related sights/visits? In particular is there much railfreight movements in areas you can readily access?
Many thanks
Transport Focus did one of their usual surveys of passengers before a new franchise is let. This was headlined "Despondent rail passengers call for better services in Wales" and included comments such as
"Passengers top priorities for the next operator include more seats and more space to...
With Labour proposing an increase in tax for those earning over £80k there has been a lot of debate about who are the rich. So at what level of income do you think people should be regarded as rich?
Just looking at Realtime trains website and I see the the 19.34 Oban to London sleeper is booked to take 3hrs 54.5mins from Oban to Glasgow QS - a distance of 100 miles ie it manages an average speed of just a shade over 25mph. Is this the slowest average speed for an express train travelling...
I've lost count of the number of threads that start off along the lines of "I was travelling from A to B when something happened". The next post is then along the lines of can you tell us what time, what route, what rolling stock, what TOC or what ticket etc was involved. The OP responds with...
Travelling to Amsterdam shortly and while there will be taking a day trip to the Hague with a break of journey at Leiden - struggling to understand the Dutch ticketing system - is the easiest way to get an off-peak Holland Travel Ticket - can you only buy "normal" tickets on a OV-chipkaart and...

This is not a discussion about the rights and wrongs of driverless trains but the technology which they require
It is nearly 50 years since driverless trains were introduced on the Victoria Line and over time they have slowly been introduced on metro lines around the world including systems...
