Travelling on 14.45 Paddington to Swansea - train announced as having a problem and not going anywhere at 14.47 - told to transfer to train on the adjacent platform and we were off at 14.53.

It's called a Set Swap ("set" being a rake of carriages or a multiple unit) and is much much easier to do at a terminus.

The TV programme Paddington Station 24/7 featured one being done for the Princess of Thailand on a recent episode.

My question is, what then formed the duty that the replacement set was originally diagrammed to do? Presumably there's a cost (financial and/or otherwise) to a decision taken which clearly benefitted the OP?

May have changed for Maintenance reasons depending where it was required to finish tonight.

Looking at Realtime Trains - it looks like trains were stepped forward (ie turned round faster) until the failed unit worked the next Swansea service an hour later
