    Roads melting in hot weather

In years gone by, it was fairly common to see or hear reports of roads "melting" in hot weather but i havent seen any during the present heatwaves. Has there been changes in the type of tarmac being used?

Train drivers’ decades-long ticket fraud ‘cost taxpayer millions

This is the headline in today's Daily Telegraph. The article is behind a paywall but what I can see it claims Anyone got access to the full article and or have any insights into what was going on?

    Historic rail fares

Is there any source of historic point to point rail fares online since privatisation. Given everything would have been digitised over this period I'm surprised nothing seems to be available.

    London to Leeds off-peak returns

I have a couple of mid-week trips planned to Leeds with unknown outbound and return times but travelling "off-peak". Are there any reasonable get arounds LNER's new ticketing system that will give me flexibility without having to get a full priced anytime return. Also how do you select their...

Linz (Austria) to Gorlitz (German/Polish border) - trip report

First leg from Linz to Prague was like travelling on a secondary long distance BR route in the 1960s. Czech railway coaches and loco with a restaurant car, stopping at stations in Austria where noone got on or off but where there were goods sidings with rakes of wagons. Single track line but...

Double TGV sets - rear set locked out of use

Presently traveling from Paris to Milan where the rear TGV set is locked out of use. Is this a common occurrence or is to provide extra capacity back to Paris for the Olympics. I seem to recall when I did this route a few years ago one set was dropped at Lyon but present service bypasses Lyon.

    London Robotaxis

Wayve, Waymo and Baidu’s Apollo Go are all meant to pilot driverless taxis in London this year. Has anyone seen one on the road yet and/or know where they are garaged?

Interrail 1st class pass - suggestions to get most from it

Will be in Milan next month and have 10 days in 2 months 1st class pass that I want to get the most out of. Was expecting to be able to take a long break but that is not now possible so only have 10 days from Friday to the Sunday the week after when I have to be back in the UK. Ideally want to...

    Boxing Day - motorway traffic

I have just spent 8 hrs driving on various motorways today. Not used to motorway driving at this time of year I was surprised by the high volume of traffic. Apart from first thing in the morning, it was virtually bumper to bumper all the time and with few trucks on the road it was generally...

Will East West Rail Bedford to Cambridge be given up on?

Moderator note: split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/chiltern-railways-selected-as-operator-for-the-first-stage-of-east-west-rail-oxford-to-milton-keynes.295137/ And we wonder why there is a reluctance by governments of all persuasions to put money into the country's rail network...

Explosive planted on Warsaw-Lublin rail line

Media are reporting sabotage on Warsaw Lublin line, presumably to disrupt military traffic into Ukraine. https://www.reuters.com/world/explosion-polish-railway-track-was-caused-by-sabotage-pm-says-2025-11-17/

    Traitors and Strathspey Railway

I was intrigued as to the safety regime that would have applied to last night's episode of Traitors. At one stage the contestants were filmed in an open "wagon" on the moving train which was subsequently "blown up". Presumably, drones were used for some of the filming but I wonder if camera...

Limit app driver numbers 'to protect black cabs' in London

BBC is reporting a London Assembly report that wants to encourage more taxis and reduce the number of minicabs. If Assembly members really want to increase the number of black cabs then they need to replace the outdated Knowledge with a much simpler test that recogonises the existence of Sat...

Bike thefts at stations effectively 'decriminalised' as BTP to no longer investigate

The BBC has a news item giving a list of crimes that the police will no longer investigate under certain circumstances. The reason given is the time taken to review CCTV. This seems to suggest that the police continue to review CCTV from start to finish rather than a much quicker technique...

Yes another consultancy producing a fairly meaningless report on the state of the rail industry

Arthur D Little had their short paper covered by The Times today. Despite it being based on discussions with senior leaders in the rail industry it seems to show a limited understanding of a whole range of factors. Eg they negatively compare load factors on trains into a few cities with the 81%...

With the development of GBR are there opportunities to simplify the Routing Guide?

I seem to recall a 1960s? BR equivalent of the Routing Guide which was a very short document. We now have a very complex version which has grown like topsy to protect individual TOC revenues. As we move back to a single rail provider is there a case for simplifying the routing guide and if we...

London - Milton Keynes daily commute

Looking at the cheapest way to do this with a senior railcard and 60+Oyster. Would the best bet be Advance singles outbound, assuming start times fairly fixed and walk up off peak single to Watford Junc on way back given more uncertainty on finishing times?

Cross-country service Manchester to Derby via Birmingham

On Ebay there was a Cross Country window label for a service from Manchester Piccadilly to Derby via Stockport, Macclesfield, Stoke, Stafford, Wolverhampton, Birmingham New Street, Tamworth, Burton-on-Trent and Derby. Difficult to make out the date but it seems to be 1997. Don't recall such a...

    Train passenger loading data

More TOCs are making available individual train loading data including South Western, South Eastern, GTR, Northern and Merseyrail at raildata.org.uk. The data is not available for all services and there are sometimes issues with accuracy. Merseyrail has just withdrawn its data for this reason...
