I'm not going to provide details in case it gets the individual in trouble but the very first time I encountered it was at the suggestion of someone in a ticket office when I had requested a direct ticket. I have also had instances where I have been made aware of a cheaper split than the one I...
I think it should also be bourne in mind that split ticketers are also willing to accept a slower journey by taking a stopper that calls at the relevant station rather than a faster train.
You see the odd TPE sat there at weekend evenings and have even seen an XC train on one occasion. What is interesting is that a substantial amount of land lies vacant the other side of the track, giving the station another two potential through platforms should the need ever arise.
In response to Rich, I see your point regarding the metrolink. However, Old Trafford (albeit a much bigger stadium) is effectively served by two Metrolink lines as well as a rail halt. The benefit of restoring the curve, which has already been raised would be to route traffic from Piccadilly...
I would imagine it is still sound structurally as there are a few business using the arches underneath. If you follow the route using google maps it seems the route of the old loop it seems to be clear of development all the way to the old site of Miles Platting station. It would also run close...

There are two Stockport - Stalybridge tickets in the system for day returns, one for the direct service and one for route via Manchester (£3.30 in this case), I would imagine NRE is not offering the direct route as a return as the direct journey back does not exist. The TVM at Stalybridge used...
I think the point people are trying to make with the airline comparisson is that an airline ticket is for a specific flight, rather then being on a turn-up & go basis.
As the stories listed prove, the majority of passengers do know the restriction as they have a got a ready-made (albiet...
