    Serco for Sleeper

A four class system seems a little over the top. Most important thing for me is what is the future of the lounge car? Oh and will the existing MkIII sleeper stock find a new use elsewhere?

    Serco for Sleeper

I think on board showers are necessary. Sharing a public shower in this day and age is only ok at a gym or a rugby club...

    Serco for Sleeper

The guards and hosts are currently employed by FSR so they will move across. How about the contracted drivers from DBS. And how does this affect the Queen street men who work the fort William trains?

    153's with '158' seats

The ATW ones have seats in removed from 158s. They were raised by a couple of inches to improve the view... I don't think they are too bad really. I would be keen to remove the small cabs and pair them up though!

What happens when you pull the emergency handle?

175s (and I assume 180s and 390s and others) have passcoms which, when pulled will allow the passenger to speak to the driver. He can then suppress the automatic brake application to get the train to a suitable place to stop. 150s and 158s dump air as has been said above. They must be reset...

Failure to produce a ticket when requested

From time to time I will leave somebody who is taking their time and come back to them later. If I don't believe them, I may charge them in the understanding that if they find their ticket before the end of the journey I will refund them. (I have never had to do a refund yet)

    ATW 'Gerald'

I'd like to see the loco and stock remain at Holyhead and keep it's path to Chester. It could then work the 0712, but missing Runcorn East and Earlestown. Add in a full first class coach and there would be trade off the coast in my opinion. Hopefully some of the excess passengers could then be...

    ATW 'Gerald'

DB acquired the stock for use where required. ATW still pay DB - funding currently provided by the WG. It would make more sense to make the 0712 loco hauled and encourage those who use the 0740 to travel earlier.

    ATW 'Gerald'

    The 0712 Manchester is the 4 car 158. The 0740 is a 175 job.

Disabled Person's Railcard - can rail staff ask about the disability?

I would never ask a disabled railcard holder why they had the railcard that's up to the railcard issuer. I might check the name against their payment card, or question their holding of the railcard if it said Mr X and it was a woman travelling alone who handed it to me.

Mainline routes normally squeeze stopping trains between flyers.

Fake ticket scam using stolen machine

Ticket stock probably isn't an issue. Lots of avantix stock is kept very insecurely around the network. Not all guards and revenue staff are conscientious. The fraudsters may even have had somebody on the inside, a cleaner maybe, able to pinch stock from a ticket office or guards bag.

Fake ticket scam using stolen machine

If it was a real ticket machine, it would issue real tickets. They would not be paid for but they would not be fake. Obviously the article doesn't want to give the game away but I wonder what the detail was.

    CrossCountry Prosecution article (Guardian)

Fair point, but why give a false address. I hate it when people say "I am the first to admit I was at fault" when they fail to admit it until they have been caught out and boxed into a corner...

ATW - Advance fares and seat reservations

158s must work Cambrian trains due to ERTMS, the cab signalling system. This means they form most Birmingham trains. When in a 4 coach formation for the Cambrian, the front two leaving Birmingham will be D and F for Harlech. The rear two will be A and C, the Aberystwyth part. A and D have...

Do any Train Companies own replacement buses?

Arriva created a company to organise road replacements a couple of years ago. ATW and XC replacement road transport is now coordinated in house however rarely uses Arriva buses in part at least because Arriva buses don't have much spare capacity. Also, for longer distances services buses are far...

    Chester-Liverpool Express

A saving of 15 mins on a 45 min journey is considerable and I believe there are enough passengers going the whole way to justify it.

    Orient Express

The Belmond British Pullman is based at Stewarts Lane. The trains are operated by DB. Steam hauled trips tend to use Merchant Navy 'Clan Line' also based at Stewarts Lane. Clan Line is owned and maintained by the Merchant Navy Loco Preservation Society. The Belmond Northern Belle incidentally...
