    GCR 'Cromwell Pullman'

You know, I'm going to go completely off track here and say something completely unexpected. I dont like either version. I don't like mock heritage, as it can look a little too much like the Disneyland castle. I don't like the modern one either as it is trying too hard to be cutting edge. I...

    GCR 'Cromwell Pullman'

Having read all the above I get the impression that the comercial managers are commercialising the railway without making money! Spending all that loaned cash on another dining train, even with a dining train and a buffet car... As for the cafes, I left this TripAdvisor review...

    GCR 'Cromwell Pullman'

That is an awful financial deal to have agreed! And that coach just looks daft. --- old post above --- --- new post below --- http://www.rail.co.uk/images/3328/original/3-royal-scotsman-balcony-co.gif Royal Scotsman is far more in proportion...

    GCR 'Cromwell Pullman'

I do agree with you there. The GCR seem to be obsessed by food and the bistro at Quorn has provided me with awful service every time I've been there. I tend just to use the cafes on the platforms at the three stations. On a previous gala I enjoyed a breakfast in the Gresley buffet car only to...

    GCR 'Cromwell Pullman'

I wonder if anybody has thought of kitting out a MkI kitchen car as a McDonalds resturant. I can see that being quite popular for a tourist line. As for the veranda, does anybody take issue with the Royal Scotsman one, or any other metro camel Pullman butchery jobs they did in creating what is...

Different train types (Pacer + 150) on one train

Talking of 170 158 combos, there have been a couple of occasions now where an ATW 158 has rescued or been rescued by a LM 170...

Different train types (Pacer + 150) on one train

I'm always suprised that northern don't try and match gangwayed stock. While it is understandable to strengthen a 15x with a pacer it is not uncommon to see a 150/1 with a 150/2 or 156. Another regular sight, London Midland often use a 170-153 combo on the Birmingham - Walsall - Rugeley trains.

Late trains with no explanations or apologies

It's an awkward balance. Too many apologies with no real information can be tedious and in a stoping train, you could announce your apologies 6 times in half an hour and still miss people doing shorter journeys. I feel people's expectations are too high at times too. As for platforms at...

    Great coupling

Coupling first saves time. Should be preceded by an announcement. Happens a lot at Mach and Shrewsbury...

Fares that are supposed to be cheaper... but aren't.

Virgin only fares have been a right pain in the backside between Manchester and Chester/North Wales.

    Lack of Ticket Checking

Northern frequently operate trains when the guards cannot walk through, and on top of this still insist guards dispatch from the rear. Revenue is not considered.

    Lack of Ticket Checking

I don't like penalty fare schemes, I don't feel they actually work. Far too many people I suspect actually work on the basis of handing over a £20 penalty whenever they get caught on the basis that they will be caught far less often than they travel for free. Do people get prosecuted after the...

    Lack of Ticket Checking

You don't buy the ticket for it to be checked. You buy the ticket to be an honest decent member of society.

Trespass incident during PRCLT event at Appleby

Even diesel haulage doesn't solve the problem. A few hefty fines here well reported in the railway and wider press would be well worthwhile.

Observations as a conductor doing tickets..

When I worked on a ticket barrier I had a guy ask me to come to one side. I asked what was wrong and he said "I want you to remember me so I don't have to show my pass when I come through" pulling out a silver status pass.

Observations as a conductor doing tickets..

My company issued an instruction stating guards should complete a full ticket check on every crew change. That means on a number of direct services 4 checks in 5 hours with a gateline at the end. At the other extreme, on the route there are two very small gated stations 10 mins apart. During...

    Discretion or Inconsistency

On a route I work over we have the insane situation where there are three routes and three sets of fares. We have an any permitted fare valid on our services, a route specific fare for the longer direct route and a TOC specific fare for a third route which involves a change. The setter of the...
