SWR - Further Timetable Reductions from 17/1

Is there etiquette around quoting yourself? Never mind. Taking the hour between 07:00 and 08:00 as I quoted earlier, I don’t see 16 carriages an hour as an improvement on the 32 we got last week or the 50/60 we got 2 years ago. How is the current service better?

SWR - Further Timetable Reductions from 17/1

That will only worsen from now I reckon, probably even if additional services are restored.

Why the fear/anger (or similar) emotions around mask wearing?

I’m not going into the “control” or “freedom” stuff I’m afraid that’s just a rather pointless excuse for an argument looking for a target. i understand the opinions, what no one has yet explained is the vehemence with which they’re held and pushed in a lot of places. Masks have been as...

Why the fear/anger (or similar) emotions around mask wearing?

No, nor do I need to. Again, I just don’t feel that strongly either way about this. I don't know if they work or not but it costs me next to nothing to wear one except an inability to see when my glasses steam up. if medical authority says they might do some good, fine. I have a tendency to...

Why the fear/anger (or similar) emotions around mask wearing?

I grant that’s why some may want them to go, No more than that though. All of this “have to” from people with no medical qualification is something I’ve tuned out months ago. (Can you tell I’ve been into this quite heavily on forums elsewhere? I probably shouldn’t push it here.) Edit: OK at...

Why the fear/anger (or similar) emotions around mask wearing?

Mod Note: Posts #1 - #15 originally in this thread. The general fear and anger I see around face masks is something I just don’t understand. They’re as annoying to wear as anything on earth but I really don’t understand the “got to go” stuff. It’s hardly that much of an imposition But if they...

SWR - Further Timetable Reductions from 17/1

Peak service through from from Epsom into Waterloo has dropped from 6 per hour 8/10-car (pre-Covid) to 4 per hour and now down to 2 per hour 8 car (emergency). So that 16 carriages per hour instead of 50/60. I’ve no idea how full they are/were in the last 2 years since I don‘t work in London...

SWT Red Livery - still shiny on EMUs in service, how?

I once came across a pair in the bay platform at Kingston. In the debranded green, that is. I think it was driver training rather then anything more unusual, though. Edit: It was long enough ago I’m having doubts as to whether I saw them personally or on video somewhere.

SWR outgoing Metro fleet withdrawals (complete)

There was talk of something a long way back but I haven’t heard anything recently. I’m not sure if it was an “industry” plan or an enthusiasts dream though, I can’t remember where I saw it.

SWR outgoing Metro fleet withdrawals (complete)

Yeah. That’s why I’d need to think about it to realise. I’d probably be lucky to even notice the closure unless I happen to need to get a train somewhere.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

Yes and no. I see your point and I realise that I don’t actually know what the maximum service capabilities are with the current stock. I’m assuming a need for additional units in the hope that we can get back to something like the service we used to have. The 66% peak reduction we’ve had here...

SWR outgoing Metro fleet withdrawals (complete)

Since I’ve lived here, I’ve only seen it used to turn trains round and head back towards London when work’s going on at Epsom (They wait for time outside the house.) I never realised they used it in the reverse direction too - I probably never thought about it to be honest.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

Clearly, if you break it down into its component parts then different subsystems may be able to be developed and tested on testbed vehicles with the relevant hardware fitted. That would only work for some of the bits, though, those that didn’t depend too much on the equipment and software in the...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

How could you do that? A 455 doesn’t have any of the bits and pieces the software needs to talk to. As a test bed it would be useless unless you fitted all the hardware of a 701 to it at which point you’d have a test bed that looked like the real thing to the software but performed completely...

SWR outgoing Metro fleet withdrawals (complete)

I haven’t been on one to check but I imagine they run back down the Up line from platform 1 and then use the crossover where the lines come back together, after the down line comes off the embankment (where I believe the entry to the goods yard used to be), to continue on the Down line. Edit...

SWR outgoing Metro fleet withdrawals (complete)

Technically (yes, I’m a pedant) they’re still running, they’ve just been diverted to run to Raynes Park via Epsom, replacing the Dorkings I guess, so I get a pretty normal service level trundling past the end of the garden.

    GTR - Work Experience vacancies

Resurrecting a slightly old thread, my son’s just started two weeks year 10 work experience on the media team with GTR at London Bridge. At some point this week he’s tasked with going out in the cab of a class 700 and taking some pictures of stations. I’m not jealous.

New South Western franchise: Awarded to First/MTR

But you then have the problem of halving the train service for those of us living between Wimbledon and Epsom which is a fully built up residential area. I think these options become more viable once/if Crossrail 2 ever happens although there will then be more trains between Epsom and Wimbledon...
