As at least two people have now pointed out, it depends on the status of the batteries on a 165. Going pitch black on or after the engine shut down is very common.
Not on 165s. It is entirely dependent on the auxiliary batteries on each individual vehicle and at what point in their life cycle they are. If the batteries are getting towards the end of their lives the saloon lighting will drop out completely almost as soon as the engines are shut down. It...
The Chiltern loco-hauled stock was originally going to be blue. This changed when the plug got pulled on Wrexham & Shropshire and Chiltern inherited their stock. It was more cost effective to just do some vinyl modifications to the WSMR silver.
I'm not convinced that they way we do it here is necessarily best practice but it can be logically defended. The advertised departure time is the time the train *departs*. In order to achieve that the doors need to be closed slightly before departure time.
The station building at Mitcham is thought to have predated the railway, although it has not been in railway use since the line was converted into Tramlink.
There were also rumours that the building at Cheltenham (Lansdown) was converted from an existing house but I think in this case the...
If you'll forgive a minor stray off topic, this kind of comes from the same place. I cannot adequately express how much I hate the term "talent pool", which seems to have taken over from the more traditional "waiting list".
It reminds me of the early post-privatisation suggestion from one of the TOCs (I forget which) for Commuter Guards. IIRC the proposal was to get certain passengers to act as guards or RPIs in return for free or reduced price travel.
Aylesbury had its platforms renumbered following the NSE Total Route Rationalisation in the late 80s/early 90s. The bay platform (no. 1) was removed, then platform 2 became platform 3, platform 3 became platform 2 and platform 4 became platform 1. It still occasionally confuses pax that platform...
You've got to go a long way to beat Customer Driver, but ones I have come across include Area Station Managers being renamed Customer Service Managers, Booking Office Clerks being renamed Station Hosts and RPIs renamed Customer Service Inspectors. Also London Underground have Train Operators...
A possible side-effect of this system might be a reluctance to check one's schedule card so frequently, for fear of triggering a distraction alert. Potentially this could lead to an increase in fail to call incidents and the suchlike. I understand the system has been developed for road use...
You can couple a 16x unit to a 15x unit in an emergency but only mechanically, not electrically. The electrical boxes have to be manually retracted before coupling.
If the OP specifically means TOC traincrew then I'd suggest Aylesbury Vale Parkway to Quainton Road is a contender. Only a handful of Aylesbury drivers sign it. Lots of FOC drivers sign the route of course.
82303 has been out of use at Wembley for a very long time. Not sure exactly what is wrong with it, but I've heard rumours it won't be running in service again.
I think its more a case that it has survived against the odds rather than that it is preserved. Whether it will survive the current Underground escalator/entrance rebuild remains to be seen.
