    They have been working on " rules of engagement" since before Nelsons time "shot across the bows " etc. so every maritime power is well rehearsed on how far they can "push it". Eg Russian submarines transit the channel with flag flying on the surface as per some maritime law.

    If Tavistock had managed to stay open till around 1975, ( after Bridport) it probably would still be with us however unprofitable and how much subsidy it would require.

    Different set of people use the train versus a bus. Bus travel has always been " travel of last resort" when there is no other public transport option. I also feel the need to service Gunnislake and the reversal at Bere Alston, make Tavistock way more complicated to the powers that be , to make...

    Ok, just as a comparison. In 1953 Bradshaw Tavistock North to Plymouth North Road ( stopping everywhere was 43 minutes.

    Reminds me of the Apollo 13 story, with cylindrical CO2 scrubber cartridges in the LEM and square ones in the command module ( or vice versa, can't remember!)

    The driver in my experience on Thameslink tells you of cut stops ( usually fast from Letchworth to Cambridge) not the overhead screens which usually carry the usual stopping pattern for quite a while after the decision to skip stops is taken.

    We do seem to be in a continuing downward spiral, or "doom loop" I feel. " Managed decline" I think BR called it.     I hate the GWML, the trains to Devon ride very poorly, with a sickening random violent side lurch on occasion coupled with the paper thin cushions is actually painful. Much more comfy in the car.
