Why is charge so high when trying to get refund for standard tickets 4 wk before date

I dont think it is a rule. A TOC can charge less if it wants to. It used to be £5 and not all TOC increased it to £10 at the same time. If it was rule then Southern would not be allowed to charge zero which is effectively what they are doing with their rainy day offer.

    Weekend First on FGW

Yes any ticket can be upgraded to weekend first on FGW Just to add FGW chaanged their policy and it is no longer possible to book weekend first in advance - only available on the train. If you want to pre book first then you will either need an advance or a full price first class ticket.

Why is charge so high when trying to get refund for standard tickets 4 wk before date

I dont see how you could charge a percentage as an admin fee. The amount of work to process a refund will be the same if your ticket cost £1 or £100. £10 doesnt seem too bad to me.

Why can I get no refund on advance tickets even though cancelling 3 weeks in advance

Are you planning on making the journey again in the next three months ? You can change them for a later train and just pay a £10 admin fee.

    Head out the window

No there is no requirement to have your head out the window. The requirement is to remain at the door until the train has cleared the platform. How long you keep your head out of the window is up to the guard and his /her own personal safety. There are some long platforms out there and...

    Advance tickets on overcrowded trains

Also sometimes events can catch the TOC out. There was a Bath charity fun run last year on a Sunday. Unexpectedly large number of people came to watch and a couple of trains going back to Swindon were so full some were left behind.

how much commission for selling a ticket?

I also think that if the TOC selling the ticket gets some of the revenue then they dont get commission on the sale they just get the amount ORCATS allocates to them. For example FGW selling a ticket from London to Winchester will just get the amount allocated under Orcats as they provide some...

Oyster Extension Permits (OEPs) scrapped from May 2011

But this is not a bug. If you make any PAYG journey you must touch in and touch out. You will need to get out at the zone 3 boundary station and touch in and then get back on or get the next train and touch out at paddington. And anyway once you pass the zone 3 station you will be liable for...

    Railcard from unstaffed station

Strictly speaking you will have to buy an undiscounted ticket as you dont have a railcard. I have only encountered this situation once and they wanted a return. I sold them the discounted ticket and wrote on the ticket that they would buy the railcard on arrival.
