Checking out the seating plan on Virgin Trains' Pendolinios (http://www.virgintrains.co.uk/assets/pdf/global/seating-plan.pdf) some of the seats in first class are marked "traveller seats". What are they?
According to the Routeing Guide, Southport has three routeing points: Liverpool group, Wigan group and Preston Lancs. Southport hasn't had a line to Preston since 1964 (you need to change at Wigan), so why is Preston considered a routeing point? :-?
Megabus/train advanced booking seems to have ground to a halt at 11 December. It's been offering no fares past that date for weeks (I've checked London to Liverpool and a few other routes).
The only reason I can think of is that there will be no deep discounts for the Christmas period. Any...
An ordinary day. An ordinary man. Let us call him Mr Smith. Mr Smith is currently heading out of London by train. He is in possession of (for reasons that we need not go into here) a Z1-3 travelcard and a Z4-6 travelcard. His train has just left Wembley Central (zone 3). Its next stop is Harrow...
Can anyone explain this to me?
When I travel from Norbury to Windsor ER the off-peak return is £9.00. While idly waiting at Windsor I checked ticket prices and was surprised to see that the same ticket in "reverse formation" was £10.60. Additionally I found a Super off-peak return for £8.50...
No doubt a lot of people are annoyed by the cost of single fares when compared to day returns. A return from Norbury to Staines is £7.10, while a single is £6.40 - 90% of the cost!! There is no option for an open or weekend return, so if I want to stay with friends overnight I pay 80% extra...
I'll be travelling from Euston to Liverpool on Wednesday (Virgin Trains) and I have my Megabus voucher text message. I've read the website T&Cs and I can't see any particular problems, but I like to be prepared for most eventualities. So what can I expect when I turn up at the platform gate...
Thanks to http://www.oyster-rail.org.uk/ I now know that there are no peak fares between Stratford and Clapham Junction, and the TfL single fare calculator clearly indicates this.
The "oddity" (which to be fair, is also clearly indicated) is that by extending a journey by just a single stop...
Between Shepherd's Bush and Willesden Junction, the power supply changes over between overhead and third rail, along with the accompanying thumps and groans as the pantograph is being extended/retracted (a little startling the first time it is experienced). There is an overlap stretch of track...
This railway has quite an interesting story. In addition to it being "slow" (20kph), it is also partially disassembled during the winter.
Japan's "slowest train"
I have noticed on a couple of occasions while travelling south from Kensington Olympia that, up to Clapham Junction, there is a guard who is controlling the doors and making announcements. However he "disappears" at that point. Is this union rules, some arcane contractual arrangement, or am I...
Were any of the regulars here at KPA this evening at 18:20. I saw a couple of groups on the Willesden Junction platform as I was waiting on the other side. Something diesel (by the smell of it) passed through just after I had boarded my train so I didn't get to see what it was.
I was changing at Slough, on my way from Windsor to Maidenhead, when a fast train sped through at really high speed, much higher than I am used to witnessing. According to Wikipedia it was a class 43, which has a top speed of 148mph. Normally my only experience with high speed trains is being a...
Hi there,
I discovered your forum a few months back as I was starting to get all excited about the prospect of a more unified fare system in London using Oyster PAYG. For some reason I enjoy trying to find out how far I can go for the lowest possible fare (hence my ID) :D.
I occasionally...
